Does a Nikon 70-200mm VR + Kenko 1.4x DGX TC get the same quality as the DG?

I thought I'd ask about this as I've read thru a few posts/threads but it is either Canon or the Nikon 70-200 VRII that was being answered or asked about....

So I would like to know if the Kenko pro 300 1.4x DGX TC gives the same quality on the Nikon 70-200mm VR (Not the lastest VRII) as the earlier 1.4x DG - just that OSD are no longer selling the DG but now only the DGX...

Optically the Kenko PRO 300 DG and DGX converters are identical, the only difference AFAIK is the chip that now accurately reports focal length of the lens used in the EXIF data.

Nikon fit never had this EXIF "problem". I've used (and still own) the DG version and my 300mm f/2.8 lens is accurately reported at a 420mm f/4 and a 70-200 VR is reported as 280mm f/4.

The "X" fix seems to be for Canon - my Sony fit versions are also fine EXIF-wise (a 2x non DG Pro 300 reports as 800mm correctly with my 70-400 SSM)

There is no difference between non-DG, DG and DGX - but note how the price has gone up each time...!
 
I was wondering as some where saying that the DGX made the 70-200mm VRII slightly soft & was wondering if it done the same on the earlier Nikon 70-200mm VR...

I know that some TP'rs who have the norm "DG & 70-200mm VR" & say its a good combo but wanted to know if this was the same with the DGX....

So if the DGX & 70-200mm VR works as well as its ealier DG version then I will get one (DGX)...

Any TC on a zoom lens will make it softer. That's normal.

The DGX will be no softer than a DG, and no softer than a Nikon 1.4x TC-14E.

TC's are best used with primes, in reality.
