domain name and hosting

How easy is it to sync a domain name with a hosting company?
 
i take it you mean transferring a domain to a different host?

usually you just have to notify both your old and new host, then wait for them to make the changes. once done wait for DNS records to update, normally up to 48 hours for that.
 
Sounds fairly simple then.

I probably should have expanded my original comment to say that I will be buying the domain name first then using something like clikpic/photium to host the webpage.

I guess the same principle still applies though.

Any recommendations for places to buy domain names where you are actually the registered owner and not the company you bought it from?
 
Beware after a year or however long you buy the domain for, Nominet will you send you a nice little invoice for £100 or somewhere around there to re-register the domain.

Throw it in the bin and re register with 123reg or whoever you buy with.

Cheers for the tip off!

123 are offering the Domain I would like for 2 years, but I would put a reminder in my calendar as a reminder when its due.
 
Oh don't worry they'll remind you! About a year before, then 6 Months, 3 months, 2 months, 1 month, 30 days, 10 days, 3 days, 1 day, and then for a while after too.

The domain doesn't instantly disappear it stays in your name for several weeks after it expires so you can renew it again.
 
I use 123reg and my domain was about £20 for two years... It is due for renewal soon and I have had two different letters saying its up for renewal - one for £100/year and the other for £175 for two years...

I will be renewing through 123
 
I rate Domain Monster as they are ICANN accredited rather than a middleman like a lot of other resistrars.

Why would Nominet send out an invoice? They are the registry for UK domain names, they do not sell domain names.

I use 1and1.co.uk

Never had any issues. I've never really shopped around. Service is always up and not expensive and a decent amount of space
 
Well I'm very surprised they still deal with non members as they are supposed to be independant and be the governing body for all UK domain names.

It is deffo going to stop, perhaps it has been delayed.

I feel left out.. I've never had a letter from nominet (and own 15+ .co.uk domain names!)

In all seriousness... whatever and whoever you decide to register with, make sure that you DON'T, under any circumstances, register the domains along with your hosting, and make sure that any domains are registered in your name. Both of these steps ensure that you retain the control over your domains, if you change hosting it's easier to move if your domain is registered away from the hosts so they can't be idiots about it, and, obviously having the domain registered in your name just makes sense from a control point of view :)
