Domain name and web hosting

I have a domain name which I have pointed to my photium webpage by doing a "www" A name and assigning the IP address.

Am I right in thinking it could take up to 72 hours before the two are linked?

I take it I will know for certain when I am able to view my webpage by typing the URL or getting a hit in google?

First time I have done this so it's all new to me.
 
Yeah you are right. I checked this morning and it was all up and running.
