I've got a website, it's a freeby one but it does me fine for now. What I would like is my own domain name. What I don't know is how it works with forwarding to my current site? Can anyone offer an insight?

Whoever you buy the domain name from will give you some sort of control over the forwarding address using a log-in to their website to change it.

Hi Chris,

It is fairly straight forward. When you buy a domain you will get a control panel where you can change some configuration details. The easiest is to set up a forward where every thing is forwarded to where your web site is located i.e. www.mydomainname.co.uk forwards to www.mywebsitehost.co.uk.

The best way is to get the nameserver details from your host and then change the name server details for your domain name.

If you buy your domain from some of the more well known suppliers they have very good online help. I use 123reg and had never done it before so relied on their help screens to guide me.

Cheers

Dave

to be honest webspace with a domain is peanuts these days, you may as well just shift the lot over to the new server and have the redirect on the temp site.

probably get better service on the paid webspace too.

True enough. I'll have a good look

123reg is who I looked at last night Dave.

Chris

try Easyspace.com

they do packages for £27 per year which includes a your website name, 5 x email addresses and storage space, easy to use and they have never failed me yet.

Looking at Photium at the minute. Curious about bandwidth now though. They include 50gb but I've no idea how this compares in real terms

You need to have an idea how many pictures you will have on your website and what size in KB they average.. You multiply that by the number of visitors per month and thats the bandwidth

For a standar website 50gb is way way more than enough

For a website 50mb of pics its only gonna take 1000 visitors to eat all the bandwidth
