Yes
You have the wrong lens on.
On holiday recently in the lakes. Top end of Windermere with camera and gear, when a jet flies straight up the lake. CLICK CLICK CLICK..
About 4 shots as it passes overhead.
With a 17-50 on the camera.(i'd been doing wide landscapey and lake views).
So i have four shots of a tiny plane in the centre of the image.

Whats hanging over my shoulder in its case?.
A bloody 100-400L IS.
b****r.

I know what you mean. I was in the garden with my 50-135 when a UFO appeared (it is some sort of balloon). I instinctively took a shot.

By the time I got indoors, extracted the 150-500 and went back out, it had gone.

I know the feeling. I was shooting some wide angles of Loch Ness when a black chopper came flying down over the Loch. It was gone again before I could even think of changing lenses.

I know the feeling. Now, if I see something like that, instead of trying to do what I would ideally prefer to do, and compose a picture like I had the long lens on, I try to compose the 'surprise' object with the environment, to get a different kind of shot.

Not sure if that makes sense, hopefully you get what I'm trying to get across.

years ago i was a delievery driver up in the lakes and the RAF were doing some low level flying. I was above the planes and all i had was a point and shoot. it was a fantastic sunny clear day and all I had was my point and shoot.

with the plane blending into the background it was like spotting a full stop in the bible.
