I realise that the title is a bit confusing but I'm not sure if what I'm looking for even exists.

Please bear/bare(?) with me as I'm probably one of the least technical people on this forum.

Basically, my laptop is showing as having about 80Gb of 100Gb used up over 2 drives.

I have about 10Gb of music and photos and the program file is just under 4Gb.

I'm running Vista and only ever really use the basic microsoft office progs and photoshop. Other than t'internet that's really it.

A colleague had heard of some free software that you can download that will go through the computer and give you a list of everything on there and the size of the file, but couldn't remember the name. I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

Has anyone heard of such a thing? Or, if not, can steer me in the direction of how to clear the drives up.

Like I say, I'm not very technical so please talk slowly, preferably with pictures.

you could try going to a command prompt and typing the following:

dir c:\ /S /O-S > c:\list.txt

This will give you a list of all files on your c: drive with sizes in bytes sorted by directory by size in a file called list.txt in the root of c:. Change c:\ to whichever drive you want. HTH.

So what you're saying is that you think that there's no way you've used 80GB of your HD storage and you want to find the offending data?

It sounds like a file is reporting an erroneous size. And if it is that it ought to be relatively simple to fix.

Don't do that, do this:

1. Click on Start > Search > For Files or Folders.

2. Click on Advanced Search.

3. Select Choose Search Locations from the Location drop-down menu.

4. Double-click on Computer and you'll see the list expand to show your hard-drives and their assigned letters.

5. Tick the boxes next to the drives you want to search.

6. Click on OK.

7. Click on the any drop-down next to Size (KB) and choose is greater than.

8. Click once in the Add a file size box and type in 100000.

9. Tick the Include non-indexed, hidden and system files (might be slow) option.

10. Click on Search.

11. Go and make a cup of tea and when you come back the search should have finished.

12. Click on the downward triangle next to the Views button above the search results.

13. Choose Details.

14. You'll see the search results below the Views button change appearance. And you should see a Size field appear.

15. Click on the Size field until the results are ordered from largest to smallest, from top to bottom.

16. Come back on here and tell us what the largest files are. We're probably looking for a single file in the region of 1,000,000 KB or above.
 
Hi, thanks for all of the posts.
I did start to run doublekiller but then got distracted with my tea and Heston when I can back to it it had crashed.
It did show a load of duplicate files though. I think that when vista runs its backups the previous backups are being kept too.

I'll try the various methods tomorrow and report back.

A culprit in Vista for taking space is your C:\Windows\winsxs folder.
Older your install get the bigger that folder gets too, unfortunately there's not allot you can do about it without the risk of ruining your install.
 
Right, I did say that I was computer illiterate.

I've used the two visualiser tools that've been suggested which both make it easy to see where the space is being used but don't really tell me anything as I'm not sure what to look for after that.
I've also just run double killer and I can see that there are a boat load of duplicate filenames but they all have different filepaths so how do I know which one to delete.

Sorry for being so useless. :shake:
