Yes
Dropped my camera with lens attached. Its a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 Contemporary. It only fell about a foot onto laminate floor.
It looks like something internal has broken. The Auto/manual switch has locked in place and the zoom ring feels loose next to the mount.
The lens still seems to motor and focus when fitted.
Luckily, I took out insurance on 6th Feb so I can claim with XS of £100. Also, its probably covered on house insurance. Or, I think Sigma charge about £100 for an inspection etc.
Can anyone advise what the best option would be, or are there any other repair specialists that could be considered?

I'm gutted as its my everyday lens.

when the insurance cough up buy
a nikon lens as they can take a knock or two
thats the problem with 3rd party lens's
there made of plasticine

You have probably knocked the internal lenses out of alignment (I did the same thing with a Sigma 70mm macro not long ago)
I was quoted around £70 to fix it which would be cheaper than your excess plus wouldn't affect your premium next time around.

I was selling one of those lenses because I have switched to FF.
I had it for many years and the owner before me had it for many years.
It was still perfect and was a far better lens than similar price Nikon lens.
The Nikon 55-200 I also owned felt like a complete toy in comparison.
Its just bad luck that it broke, it is a heavy lens so probably was a hard knock I imagine.
I never used to nanny my one.

Sigma want £95-£100 to examine and estimate. Who charges £70 please?

Get an insurance quote. They'll give you the option to replace it repair or in my experience just have it sent back for you to deal with yourself. I'd start with a phone call to the home insurance company.

Knowing how Insurance behave these days I wouldn't mind betting they're going to be suspicious!

I had the camera out on the 10th and have proof of it fully working so if they want to argue they can. Purely coincidental. And lucky at the same time.

No, its the 'C' version.
My options are
1. claim on kit insurance-pay £100 XS and (hopefully) get a new lens
2. Pay Sigma £100 to inspect and report-await outcome on total repair costs
3. Pay the guy at cam-rep.uk nothing to inspect and report, then whatever it costs (approx. £70 plus postage)?
4. Claim on insurance, get new lens, pay £100XS, pay £70 repair of old lens, sell old lens to recover costs??

What would you do?

yes i agree the 55-200 is a consumer lens which is very plasticy lens
i only use the 17-55mm 24-70mm 70-200mm all nikon f2.8
and there all built like a tank dropped them all at one point or another
still work perfect
quality is king in my shoes

Are you sure about option 2? In my experience Sigma don't charge for a repair estimate, and only make a nominal charge if you decline the estimate and want the lens returned unrepaired.

For what it's worth, I dug through my last 5 years worth of maintenance records to look at the cost of Sigma repairs. These are all for damage (primarily impact damage) rather than for failures:
  • Nov 2017 - 35mm f/1.4 Art, water damage: £142
  • Feb 2017 - 12-24mm Mk II, impact damage: £85
  • Oct 2016 - 50-500mm OS, impact damage: £182
  • Oct 2016 - 20mm f/1.4 Art, impact damage: £76
  • Aug 2016 - 50-100mm Art, impact damage: £167
  • Nov 2015 - 50-500mm OS, impact damage: £102
  • May 2015 - 300-800mm, front element damage: £1163
  • Feb 2015 - 10mm fisheye, impact damage: £76
  • Dec 2014 - 8mm fisheye, front element damage: £86
  • Mar 2013 - 4.5mm fisheye, impact damage: £76
  • Mar 2013 - 120-300mm, impact damage: £128
Does that help?

Thanks yes. Think I'll claim on the kit insurance. Any which way, its gonna cost around £100. If I get a new lens, then I can try and recoup the costs. If its repaired then hey-ho.
