DSLR + Magnet = ?

I've recently bought a black rapid RS5 strap for my D90. I really like it in use but one of it's features is that it uses magnets (quiet) instead of velcro (noisy) to close the various parts of the shoulder pad.

Thing is, when I'm shoving the camera into my backpack, what do I do with the strap? Usual thing is to roll it up and stuff it in either underneath or alongside the body. However, the magnets in question are surprisingly strong for their size and I'm wondering if they could have any effect on the camera internal gubbins or the sd card?

If anyone has an understanding of such matters and can advise me I would appreciate it. :)

Not sure if there is a risk to your camera, but magnets can affect electronic equipment.
May be worth emailing Nikon for a definitive answer.

you probably don't want to have magnets near the camera just for safety and I'd not use them to fix a strap either

I would be VERY careful of magnets around your memory cards, all depends on the strength of them, but magnets can wipe memory. We used to do it with old disks in school :).

Cards don't read write via magnetic transfer so will be safe. whether the camera electronics could be upset I don't know.

transistors and diodes within the camera will act differently and could change values if put under magnetic stress.i wouldn't be putting magnets near my camera.also lcds are very sensitive to changes should they be electro static or magnetic. and if a camera contains a hall effect sensor then the magnet will have a huge impact.this is dependant on the strength of the magnet. hope that helps

Wow. Thanks everybody. I've started unclipping the strap before bagging the camera, it's very quick and easy and will give me peace of mind!

POAH the magnets don't fix the strap in any way, they just hold the phone and memory card pockets shut.
