Has the peak of the DSLR wave passed? Most of the time I think that I'd really like to get a new camera, currently thinking of a D700, then I see someone lugging their kit around and the urge passes. Are Nikon going to start to thin out their line? If I were them I'd offer pro, serious amateur, hobby range.

nah DSLR's are still the reason for best IQ, i think that the entry level DSLR will diminish due to the advert of micro system camera's but they don't compare to high end and professional FF models. people will still buy DSLR's but the ones that used to buy for a hobby sometimes would rather go and purchase a GF1 or similiar however the downside to that is lack of lenses (primes, macro, wide angle etc.) and that the lenses are as expensive as hell!

To me the DSLR is yet to peak, they are getting so cheap and you can get a body and kit lens for £300 new, it sounds like soon people would invest more into a DSLR body that their compacts.

I wanted a DSLR for years, but I owned an SLR when younger & so they just feel right to me as a consequence. I don't believe their day's past - yet, but as technology moves on I see no reason why compacts wont be able to rival DSLRs in picture quality, versatility. Then as you say , why would you want to lump all the stuff about.
