Can someone who is a lot smarter than me help me out with some direction p lease?
Next weekend (dependant on weather) I am going to try to plan a trip down to Dungeness. Going to try to start my year off with a photographic outing and get myself some nice as inspired by one of my favourite TP togs, Shutterman. Problem is I am not to hot on the whole direction thing (I know, there is no hope for me).
I am based on the Isle of Sheppey and so far all I can come up with is: getting a train to Rye then apparently there are a couple of buses to Lydd then onto the reserve/Dungeness. I have to rely on trains/buses as I do not drive and any help on getting me down there (and back) would be most gratefully appreciated.

If you want a fun (and photogenic) way of getting there, go from Hythe to Dungeness via the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway...

Instructions for getting to Hythe are here:

Its not just a holiday thing, it runs all the time.

Agree, it will easier to get public transport into Hythe anyway, then the mini railway will drop you right by all the photogenic bits of Dungeness between the Pilot pub and the two lightouses.

Oh and the Pilot is a great place for lunch - but don't leave it til one to get there as they get rather busy!

Normally the steam railway would be an ideal way of getting there. They also have built a station not far from the reserve.

Unfortunately at this time of year there tends to be a limited service on the line and not all of it opens. Can't tell for definite as they haven't published the 2010 timetable on their website yet.

Kim, what is your local railway station?

Thanks guys. Will have look into that. I have an idea the weather is going to be pretty cold and windy but I think that is what goes there pretty much most of the year seeing as it is so flat and open.

Just wanting to start 2010 photographicly (is that actually a word???) on a positve note and i have always wanted to visit Dungeness with the camera.

Just wondering if you got to say Dover by train here's what they say on the steam railway's website about bus connections:

By Bus
Stagecoach buses serve the railway from Ashford, Canterbury, Hastings, Rye, Folkestone, Dover. Check with Stagecoach for full details.

A combined Bus and RH&DR Ticket is available on most Stagecoach Bus services in Kent and East Sussex. Call 08702 433711 08702 433711 for details.

Maybe once you know whether you can or not we can pop something in the meeting place section see if we can drum up a few more bodies?

Based on the 2009 timetable I don't think the steam railway operates on Saturdays in January.

I am busy on the sunday so if you make it the saturday I will be free, if you want to start a thread in the meeting section I will add my name to it when it appears.

Sound all good, Sat was the day I was intending to go. I can start a thread but I am not sure what to pout with reagrds to meeting times and places??? Don't know Dungeness that well.

Why not pick something big people can find.... the old lighthouse might be a good rally point. Easy to spot, plenty of parking nearby.

If you put a start time of around 10.30 to 11 that will give people time to get there and give plenty of time for a wander, also if people want to bring there pods they will be able to get some low light stuff from 5 onwards when the light falls off.

Sounds like a great idea. Don't forget Derek Jarman's garden at Prospect Cottage. That's an easy walk along the beach from the lighthouse.
