Any users out there that can give me more info as to what it can do ie if used as an alternative to lightroom or elements etc - is it enough as a stand alone program for most basic editing ?
I know there is a free trial but thought it worth asking first...

It's an alternative to Lightroom rather than an alternative to Photoshop. So it's very good at image based editing (IMO better than LR but at a big cost in workflow speed) but not suitable for pixel based editing.

There is a learning curve with it. Although you can just open it up and hit some defaults, prepare for some initial disappointment if you want to just hot buttons and get instant effects. Also (and this is just my opinion) I find it more suitable for "things" based photos (architecture, travel, landscapes) than "people" based photos.
