Ebay

it's the same with anything though, if you don't like what they do then stop using them. There's too many people who bitch about them but carry on using them.

If I detested BT I'd stop using BT. I wouldn't stick with them and just complain. Ebay are a business after all and their sole purpose is to make money, as much money as they can. If they keep upping fees and people keep paying them, well they're gonna keep upping their fees aren't they. Until they start losing money they aren't going to do a lot.

Why would you defend theft? What Ebay are proposing is theft and just because it doesn't affect you or most people for that matter, it does not make it right! ...

I do a small amount of product photography for an Ebay seller, but those images are mine that I allow him to use for his buisness. What happens to my images once Ebay have them? Ebay have only done this to reduce their cost for stock photos and Ebay make a profit by charging sellers for additional pics. One further point if anyone reads Ebay's rules regarding using others images they state that:

Image or Description Theft
Do not use other eBay user's images or descriptions in your listings without their permission.

Guidelines

Describe your item in your own words, take your own pictures, and you're ready to list!

Examples

The following examples are not allowed on eBay.

You want to sell an item on eBay but do not know how best to describe it. So you copy all (or substantially all) of someone else's description of the same item and, without their permission, paste it into your listing.
You copy someone else's image (without permission) and include it in your listing since it looks very similar to the item you are offering.
You like the way your competitor's About Me page looks, so you copy their look and feel and a substantial amount of the text and include it in your About Me page.
Warning

Listings that violate eBay's Image and Description theft policy may be removed early. Multiple violations of this policy could result in the suspension of your account

It's like someone stealing a chair out of a skip - who cares. I used it once, but now it is of no use to me, hence it is in the skip. If someone steals it from the skip, so what, I have no use for it and it affects me in no way whatsoever

You don't have to care :| but not all images are 'throw away' they get used many times, they cost time and money to produce and they are not the property of Ebay to do with as they wish!

I'm not talking about YOUR images. I'm talking about mine. Mine are all 'throw away' and cost no money to produce and very little time, therefore I don't care what ebay do with them

And if you do care, opt out. It's no big deal, just uncheck a box or whatever it is you have to do, no doubt it will take less than a minute to do it. I don't see how it's any different to when you sign up for something and at the bottom a checkbox is automatically ticked saying "Recieve notifications to blah blah blah"

how dare there automatically sign me up for that and make me uncheck that box. Is it really that big a deal to uncheck a box or whatever it is? Now if you had no choice I could see what people were moaning about, but you do so what's all the fuss?

No, they're going to keep upping their fees if everybody just shuts up and keeps paying them with a big smile on their face. Also, their strategy will (should be) to remain the market leader in their area (so that they can continue to make money for as long as possible).

Their **** service and greedy fees have bred a lot of resentment amongst their regular users and now the climate is right for a competitor to come and long and fight for market share. Let's face it, it wouldn't be difficult to set up an auction site with better support than eBay .

Personally, I wish that Amazon would take a stab at this online auction thing :|. Their customer service is utterly fantastic (IME), given that they are such a huge company with a vast network of warehouses and suppliers.

Meh, whatever! EBay is, in my opinion, a deeply flawed business model and one day it will be swept aside by something far better (unless they change their ways while they can). For the time being though, they remain a bunch of greedy, uncaring $%£&*"(s, IMHO .

You're still missing the point :| Their activity is: theft which is not legal! also, other than the notice that was buried in their T&C's put up on about 5th feb 2010 they have not informed anyone, that I know of :shake: So they are changing the T&C's after sign up in fact they have even moved the original notice.

The term mountain out of a molehill comes to mind. You know about it so you can opt out, it won't take you long and then you'll never have to think about it again.

Thanks for posting this info, Richard.

I'm not allowed to say what I think of eBay on this (or any other) forum, as the only words I can think of are banned from use :|.

The shine has alomst completely worn off the once guilt finished ebay... however it is too big now for anyone to challenge, short of the big "G" I guess.

Informed allows choice (I leave it to the indivdual) and regardless it is pretty cheeky of ebay to so this as they are saving ££££'s if they to produce library pictures of their own.

thieves
if they use any of my photos i'm sending them an invoice. theyve never done anything for me and i'm not helping them

 I shouldnt laugh but oh boy do they make it sound like some kind of real honour to have your image used by their library and by other sellers. I have opted out - my pictures on ebay are mainly cack, but they are MY cack ;)

:agree:

eBay get enough from me in terms of fees. They can swing if they want anything else. My goodwill followed their's out the door a long time ago.

Thanks for the catch and the heads up!!

Ian.

There is a good alternative to eBay, who as others have said don't give a toss about the small people, just their profit line. I switched to http://www.eBid.net a couple of years ago, made more in sales in the first 12 months than I had on Greedbay in the previous 12, and the fees were a heck of a lot less. If you want to sign up use this link and you earn me some buddy points :)

sounds like a good option for those annoyed at ebay. Time will tell if they continue down to be that way or if it's a new inviting way to get people to use it then gradually increase their costs like ebay did.

I think there was once a time when we LOVED ebay  most of us anyway. Then they got greedy and treated the sellers like crap, price increase after increase and then al.............oh i hate them now and cant even be bothered with it

 I stopped using them a year or so ago.

Indeed, there was a time when there were genuine bargains to be had on there and it was (almost) completely free from scammers and Chinese warehouses trying to distribute their products without going through a retailer :|.

My other hobby (aside from photography) is (bass) guitar playing and there were some really exciting auctions held for vintage guitars back in 2001-2003. Now, if you go shopping for a guitar, you just see page after page of Chinese fakes of American guitars, all with Buy It Now options and low prices - it's like a virtual Poundstretcher !

Now, when it comes to selling photographic gear, I'm doing it all through TP, even though feel that I have to make the prices slightly lower than I might get on eBay. To me, it's worth it just to avoid making eBay richer :D.

I have to say I agree with joescrivens. Ebay is there if you want to use it. If you don't then don't, alternatives do exist.

By accepting the terms and conditions you opt in. They aren't stealing your photographs, you're agreeing to let them use them.
Whenever they change the T's & C's I receive an email to notify me and i'm pretty sure everyone else who's signed up must receive the same. It's then my obligation to read those terms. If I no longer agree with them then the email even has a link showing me how to close my account.

It's also not ebay that are profiting from using your photos it's other users, let's be clear here. Unless ebay are charging people to use your pics then they don't gain anything, it's the other seller that you should have beef with.

I was going to tell you why that is so wrong, but I think you are just arguing with people to be obnoxious, and for that reason I'm out.

Thanks for the bait but I'm not that hungry. I'll stick to the topic at hand rather than perspnal insults thanks

I see no personal insults  , I also see no contribution from you as to the actual topic :cuckoo:: perhaps you should read and understand the points made :bonk: Unfortunately you seem incapable of understanding the simple concept that theft is theft, even though your beloved Ebay would like to add it to their t&C's to allow them to break the already established law of protection of property! Please try to understand the simple concept that if someone signed up to T&C'c with Ebay it does not give Ebay any legal right to circumvent the law as is .... :cuckoo:

I'm out too ...

That's fine but you seem to be incapable of understanding that I don't agree with you, and thats my prerogative. I'm not disagreeing with you because I want to annoy you. I'm speaking my thoughts as you are, we just don't agree. I can accept that I'm just a little confused as to why another grown man can't.

In the interest of proving that I am not here just to start
arguing with people to be obnoxious
I am also out.
