I would love a 70-300 VR nikon, but dont have, and are not likely to ever have the necessary funds, does any one know if the older ED version is equal in quality in every way, ie optically etc. apart from the VR? If so, a used one which seems to be available for about £150 used with a tripod might be the answer.

The ED will work OK, but you will need a lot of light and shutter speed to get near the VR version. I bought one before I bought the VR to see if I got on with it. It was a good buy at the time and I just sold it on for the same I bought it for and then went for the VR. :)

There is a 75-300 which is very good with a tripod collar (hard to find though)

It has decent tripod collar allows you to lock down the lens nicely on a tripod.

The "ED" isn't a great optic, and not much better than the AF-G (which for £65 is isn't actually too bad).

I think the 70-300 VR is pretty hard to beat for the money.

Thanks everybody,
Youv'e probably saved me £150,I think I'll wait in case I can ever afford the VR version or do without. Or perhaps I will think about upgrading my D50 for a D80 so I have more pixels allowing me to crop tighter wiothout losing too much definition. Any thoughts?

No, cropping is no substitution for longer glass and the difference between 6 and 10 megapixels is tiny.

The D50 is very sharp (sharper per pixel than the D80)

Always go for glass, over a body upgrade.

Thanks Puddleduck, fantastically quick reply, this is the sort of info that cant be had at camera shops. I always read your posts with interest. Thanks again, Ken

Hi Paul, Let us all know what you think of the lens will you please? If favourable I will look out for one.
Cheers Ken

I've just picked up one of these off ebay for £100 hopefully it will be this good :)

:razz: you lucky b****r !...scoured eBay for months then gave up...:bang:

I would love a 70-300 VR nikon, ..........

just to say...I was in Currys last night .

sales assistant got hot 'n bothered when I asked her to fit a £500 70-300VR onto a £699 D90....:lol::lol:

everyone here says "to go and try before buy" - found out it's sound advice - cos the combination didn't suit my smaller hands at all - it's a big lens
