Editing help needed

I've got lightroom 3 at last, but I'm trying to brighten a face with the brush, but when I brush over the face it's going red? What am I doing wrong? I'm very new to this as only used piasca before. I've just orders a lightroom 3 book but need to know as it's holding me up : (

You have probably got the adjustment mask on, press the letter O on the keyboard this should hide the mask or untick the "Show selected mask overlay"
