Have you tried Gimp? Its free.

As is Picasa, never tried though.

Failing that i hear Photoshop Elements is good as a condensed version of Photoshop. Goes for around 50-60 quid i believe.

Paint.Net is also free. I found it easier to use than GIMP.

Adobe Elements 9 has the ability to create masks which is a good feature of any pp software.....£50

I have Photoshop CS3 and love it. A tad costly mind

what kind of editing do you want? Lightroom is very very good for anything non pixel specific

I tried paint.net a few days ago at a friends, it's good for the price (free) but I struggled a bit to clone out a person due to the lack of being able to feather a selection (if it has feathering I failed to find it) That said I hadn't used it before and I'm spoilt by having used photoshop for years.

UFRaw seems pretty good and costs £0.00 (works nicely with Gimp)

Photoshop elements does plenty. OK, it lacks a few of the features of the full creative suite but it also costs a LOT less.

You can download a trial of Photoshop Elements so give that a whirl to see if you like it. Free alternatives are GIMP and Paint.net. Also are you a student as you can get good discounts on Adobe products?
