Email and web hosting questions

Morning folks

Need to pick the brains of people who know more about this sort of thing than I do.

To try and summarize quickly - my current domain name, website and email address is all hosted as a 'package' with 1&1.

However, I'm looking at totally re-doing my website using a particular design company/ template, and part of this process will involve hosting the site with this design company.

So my questions are:

1) I know I can keep my domain name (dandphotography.co.uk) which is registered with 1&1. But, if I'm hosting my site with the other new company I obviously don't want to be paying 1&1 for hosting, so can I ditch the 1&1 package (which is only £5 per month)?

2) If I do ditch 1&1 what will happen to my email address though (mail@dandphotography.co.uk)? I would really like to keep this as it is.

Anyone had experience of this sort of thing?

Quick answers are:

1) Yes you can ditch the 1&1 hosting - my main domain is registered with 1&1 and hosted by Vidahost (who are btw excellent). All I pay to 1&1 is the registration fee.

2) Assuming that your new hosting package includes a mail server, the hosting company should be able to set up your email address for you. You'll need to backup your emails though as they will obviously no longer be stored on the 1&1 servers.

Great, thanks mate.

Just to elaborate - the new possible host does have email accounts as part of the hosting deal yes. So just to confirm, I should be able to keep my current email address but this will only work for new emails from the time of set up with the new host?

I have been looking at this, my 1&1 account is up for renewal at the end of the month....... I am paying £30 per year for a basic site with limited storage but I have an account with one as well which costs me £10 per year! I was trying to avoid down time.

Yeap- depending on how you get the mail now (if you download it using POP via outlook (or similar)- then when you change over, you still won't lose any data, just get the new mails via the new host).

If your new hosting doesn't provide email (and even if it does) it may be worth looking at Google Apps.

You may have to pay to split up your hosting and domains though, I'm going through the process now as want to change hosts.

Great, thanks folks, very helpful as usual.

I just use webmail with 1&1 at the mo, but recently set up my new iphone for my current business email. It's done as an IMAP account which is brilliant as everything is in sync then.
Do most hosts these days have IMAP as well as pop3 for email as I wouldn't want to lose this functionality?

Yep most hosts have IMAP. One immediate benefit of IMAP is that you can move your emails across to your new account. (The simplest way is in Outlook or equivalent, download full versions of the all the emails and copy them into a local file, retaining the file structure. Then once your new IMAP account is set up, copy the emails from the local file into your new account and voila - all your emails back in your account.

Dangleman, go with TSO Host. They once supported me via email at 1:30 in the morning. :D. Only 15 quid per annum for their starter package and 30 days money back guarantee. :)
