I recently received this email and I am nearly 100% it is a worthy candidate for the chop but wanted to see if anyone else has anything like this before.

Re: Service Inquiry

Good Day,
My name is David and I am inquiring about your photograph service. I have an even coming up and I want you to come and cover. It is my moms 60th birthday. I need to know what photography services that you render and also want to know if you will be available on the 15 of January.

Please respond ASAP

Thanks In Anticipation.
David Gabe.

Reply to the email, demand payment for your time upfront and then ask for dates and venue.

Then phone the venue and see if they have a booking for that night.

My initial thought was that it said Mom instead of Mum. Of course it could well be an american that lives over here but my first thought was why would someone in America contact an English photographer lol

You could just email and ask for more info of course as it 'could' be real...?

Where's the scam?

Just sounds like an enquiry to me...

Personally I'd play it for a while, ask for more details of venue time names etc. I argree it's almost certainly a scam, but why not have a laugh and waste their time as well, and besides it just might be genuine. (yeah right!)

I think it’s a 100% scam. This type of email was discussed on another forum some time ago, where someone was take to the cleaners. They book you, pay you up front with a cheque. The cheque is made out for more than the initial amount so they ask you for a refund on the overpayment. Meanwhile the original cheque is bouncing all the way back to Nigeria.

I would advice extreme caution.

google david gabe...and you will get a shock

i couldnt find anything on snopes

Why do you think it's a scam?

For a start I don't advertise as a photographer and since I have been a photographer my main focus has been motorsport. The email reads like a scam and my email address does not feature in the To field and a different email address is supplied for replying.

By sending it to himself, then putting all the other recepients into a bcc list, they don't reveal any of them :)

true. however a lot of legit mailing lists do that.

Get the IP address from the message header, and it'll track back to somewhere like Nigeria, or somewhere in the UAE, Saudia Arabia or somewhere like that.

what for the hotmail mail server?

theres no real proof from that email alone that its a scam to be honest, its all circumstantial.

snopes is for myths and the like.

Just because there is a david gabe out there doesn't mean this is him.

I still say it's a scam

if it is then watch out

I'd be fairly sure that is a scam. Poor grammar and incorrect word choice are BIG give-aways........who would say 'render' other than a free online translation.

Well yes, obviously, but as scammers generally use computers in internet cafes, or via sat connections (untraceable), then it's unlikely.

But yes, I will concede that they could be using a proxy :p

it also depends on the email server. hotmail passes the clients connection IP, however some will just pass the mail servers IP as the origin.

Poor guy only wanted a quote and whether the OP is available......

I would respond and say cash deposit non refundable up front

Plus his bank account details, credit card details, home address and mothers maiden name. Please wake up and smell the coffee................its a scam.

Whats the harm of asking for a phone number to have a chat, ask to pay cash only and do 141 every time you call him. :)

Interesting use of syntax .... 'good day' 'render' 'even' my guess would be this was an african speaker which in itself is not suspicious. however if you use Occma's Razor

You may come to this conclusion.

1, Why you?, no disrespect but the the enquier himself does not know what services you offer.

2, Would you trust your Moms (sic) 60th birthday photographs to a photographer you do not know or have no idea what sevices they offer.

Thus if we beleive that someone would not do the above the only rational explanation is that they are scamming in some form or another.
