Hi Guys,

My step father in law has just popped around for Sunday lunch and is having some problems with his Canon 1000D (my recommendation therefore my problem!). The screen is always blank, when you look through the viewfinder the autofocus seems to work but there is a flashing "BUSY" warning. Pressing the shutter does nothing.

I have tried

Switching on off and on
changing the battery
changing the memory card
changing the lens
pressing the disp button (I thought the screen might have been off)

Any ideas? I'm not a Canon shooter so have no idea what the busy warning might be.

Have you tried taking out the button battery and or a reset to defaults ?

Pete, you mention the flashing 'busy' symbol, are you referring to the green circle on the RHS of the viewfinder? If so, this is the focus confirmation light - it flashes when the camera is unable to focus, and is fixed when focus is achieved. When it's flashing (no focus), the camera won't release the shutter.

The screen will remain blank if it is switched off (via the 'DISP' button on the rear of the camera).

Hope this helps.

Nigel

very strange the focus points light up and beep.

The disp button makes no difference I'm afraid

Sorry but what is the button battery? I have taken out the battery and tried another one...

There is a small button cell battery for keeping time/ date etc. when the camera is switched off or the main battery is out. it is usualy located inside the battery compartment and slides in and out with a small plastic holder.

I don't believe the 1000D has a button battery, I can't find one in wifey's 1000D, and not only does the manual make no mention of one it also states that the date/time may be reset if the (Li-ion rechargeable) battery is allowed to run down, or is removed for storage.

Apologies for that then, all the canons I have had in the past have had this feature.
Trust Canon to go changing things. :)

I have the exact same problem... My camera was keep flashing busy for days and days and I tried pretty much everything i could think of and others suggested but nothing. It would just eat up the battery power... However, this happened to me only 8 days after purchasing my camera so I could exchange with a new one. Then again, the same thing happened to me again today and I only exchanged it end of Jan. I care for my camera and all I do is take pictures... I turn it off if I'm not using it too... I do take a lot of pictures though... but isn't that what camera is made for...? :(
