Some thoughts about the 2X TC having been doing some objective testing with it for a few days on both the 7D and 50D with the 300mm 2.8L IS
The first thing to be said is that no matter how well you nail the focus, the effect on IQ at pixel level (full image size or 1:1) is obvious, as we should really expect. However, that's not really the full story - at reduced image sizes the converter is capable of producing some excellent results.
Both shots with the 7D, 300mm 2.8L IS and 2XTC, 800 ISO
The real problems come as the shooting range increases, particularly when the subject is a small bird, when the !Q loss due to the converter and the ability even of cameras like the 7D and 50D to continue resolving detail have a real adverse impact on the usability of images.
The combination will never match the quality of the 500mm or 500mm with 1.4X TC when you're really pushing the shooting distance. Having said that, if you can fill the frame, keep to moderate cropping, and don't get overly ambitious with shooting distances, it's capable of some remarkably good results.
I'd certainly not think twice about replacing mine if anything happened to it.
