Ok folks a question

What do people use as a default setting when generally taking pics?

I know you need to set for each occasion but wanderewd where most peeps started from.

Most of the time I use evaluative, but I use centre-weighted or spot metering depending on the light conditions. If you're doing something tricky, like shooting out of a dark room through a window to a bright outside you'll probably need to switch metering mode, but evaluative should be good for most consistent light situations.

For landscape I use matrix , most other shots I use Centre wt. or occasionly spot nrmally start with mattrix. colin.

I tend to stick to evaluative. Check the histogram, adjust the exposure compensation as required!

Matrix or evaluative is like taking a few dozen spot meter readings, interpreting them with a lifetime of knowledge, and applying the the right settings in the blink of an eye.

I always double check the histogram if the conditions look difficult, or even take a quick incident light reading, but I never fail to be amazed at how good the basic matrix reading is.

I use partial mostly... Though the fact manufacturers they include all the other options shows the need for them in special circumstances. The one I have least success with is evaluative, perhaps because it makes the decisions and so is least controllable.

When I used a hand meter I mostly used incident light, as it pegs the highlights and works what ever the background colour or situation.

The histogram is very useful, especially if you remember it basically counts how many pixels there are at each value and displays them as a graph. E.g. a dark subject should have most pixels showing on the left of the graph, so mostly, it is not helpful to change the exposure to move them to the right.
