Ever thought about downgrading?

At the moment i have top end kit. In my time of shooting I have liked no camera more than the 5d mark i. I stated in another thread that I felt this camera had something special about it at lower isos. I have this inner desire to use a 5d mark i and a 135 f2 50 1.4 and maybe a wide zoom. Imagine getting out of the camera rat race. Just getting on with it. Hard to justify as a working pro. I still feel I could do a brilliant job on a mk i. Any thoughts either way? Im just voicing my inner thoughts really. Not something im about to do, just keeps coming up in my mind.

If it gets the images you want working the way you want to work, it can't be a downgrade whatever camera it is.

It's all about the image. How you get there is entirely a personal choice.
 
I personally think 1Ds mark II is incredibly good despite being quite old (same age as 5D), but I would not want to live without reliable AF (that is 5D!) particularly with those lenses. It just shows you how good Canon FF was when Nikon (sorry Sony :) ) could just about make something bigger than compact :lol:
 
Nothing wrong with the old 5D. I used one up until earlier this year - and I mainly shoot people running around in the dark. Often, I preferred it to the 1DIV I was using alongside it, and I would guess the bulk of my folio is still made up of shots from the 5D.

Only got rid of it when I switched to a pair of 5D3s. I wouldn't go back now, but wouldn't have any issue using one for work if I had to either.
 
There's a lot to be said for having relatively simple kit such as camera and a few primes for example. Some would think it's a sort of inverse snobbery but I don't think that it is, not if it's what you really like and want to use :D

If you don't need modern bells and whistles and a simpler set up still gets you the results... job done.
 
Something quite pleasing about using a camera without all the latest features (lot get turned off or not used anyway) sensor cleaning can be a pain, but that's about it for me

I know the 5D menu system is a bit long winded, but once you get the custom setting loaded up it's not really that much of a problem

Intend using mine almost almost solely for landscapes now with a 17-40 attached, can't beat the colours that it produces and the level of detail too

Another bonus are the smaller file sizes although still amuses me how long it takes to format a memory card in camera

Eyeing up used 5ds now lol wont sell my main kit but might start a hobby kit on the side.
 
It would be difficult for me to downgrade :)
 
Like others have said "if it can get the job done for you" then why not.
i still REALLY like the 100iso output from my D2Xs & if i could shoot everything at base iso then it wouldn't be a problem.
However the performance of the D3 just lets me get shots that in no way would i be able to get using the older body. Total game changer. good enough for me to mayb e skip the D4 completely & see what the D5 brings to the table. i already have a D800 so it needs to be more than just resolution & a stop or two of decent iso performance to get me to change
i have a slow (to operate) Leica Digilux2 from around 2004 that is only any good at base iso (100) but gets usable B&Ws at max iso (400) & if i know i can slow down to use it at its strengths its great,
lovely jpgs straight out of camera & the 28-90mm f/2.0-f/2.4 Vario Summicron is possibly one of the best zooms ever made.

unfortunately it doesn't have the resolution or the speed of the latest retro offerings but it looks a hell of a lot better ;)


somebody once said treat your classic cameras like a classic car. ie only take them out on a sunny day.
sounds like a good idea to me :)
