Hmmmm, having had to get a new laptop, my old one packed in... i recently bought a Dell Studio laptop with a 17" screen and a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphic card. (by the way - I've copied that straight from the manual, I have no idea what it actually means!)

I've not had much chance to use it since I bought it, but now I'm back online, for instance, looking at photo's on here, everything is horribly pixalated...?:shrug:

Not entirely sure what to do. To be honest, feeling a bit sick that i've just bought a new laptop and its no good! :(

My fingers are crossed that I'm just a biff and that there is a simple explanation?

I know there are some people on here with awesome knowledge about this sort of thing....don't suppose anyone has an answer?
 
I think that your screen settings might be improved.
To do this, place the mouse onto the normal PC Desktop.
Right-click on your mouse and move down to select Properties.
Then click on the Settings tab. Then look for the screen resolution adjustment and ajust it to the highest possible. Click on Apply and then Ok.

I would be fairly certain its just a setting somewhere that needs adjusting, and I am also fairly certain someone will be along soon to advise on which, as my knowledge of the graphics side of things is pretty much zero. A very simple check might be on the display properties, see if adjusting the resolution higher or lower makes a difference.
 
I've just checked the display settings...the colour quality says high(32bit), desktop area, 1440x900. these are the highest settings, if i change them to something lower, it just makes everything worse...

:gag:Getting that sinking feeling!!
 
I had a similar issue with a 15.4" Dell lappy running ATI gfx

Have a look for the dpi settings, i found that windows wasn't able to handle the resolution of the screen on it's standard settings, so I needed to change it to a custom dpi setting of something daft like 129dpi

I'm on a iMac at the mo, so can't tell you where I found it :(
 
Describe pixelated - is it just pictures, icons, text? Everything? Posting a screen shot might help find the problem.

This sounds promising! Just need to figure out how the hell to change the DPI! Thank you by the way:)
 
how are you connecting ? my laptop behaves like that when i'm on a slow connection - 3G or GPRS , if you hover over a image does it tell you a higher quality image is available ?

Not sure how to post a screen shot? Text is fine, but for instance, on here, all the photos that are posted, the avatars and even where the tp background fades from one colour to another, its pixaltastic. To the point where its impossible to view an image. In fairness, it seems to worse when i'm looking at pics online, my own photos seem ok, untill i post them:shrug:
 
is it just pics on the internet? is it firefox your using? if you zoom in on firefox unless you tell it not to it enlarges the photos too and makes them look horrible, it can be changed by

View>Zoom>Zoom text only

OOOh, i'm on dial up at the moment, hence such a delay in my replies! I'm using a vodafone dongle thing, can't even get 3g, so just really slow dial up. could that be a reason?

i'd put a :beer: on it - if you leave the mouse pointer over the image it will tell you which keys to press to get a better quality image

Tried the mouse pointer bit, but doesn't seem to happen.:shrug: I'm glad its something simple though, was starting to get a bit tearful for a while!:'( Think i'll wait till i've access to a decent broadband connection before throwing the whole thing out of the window!:D

If you're on dial up, think about using some add blocking (I can suggest using no-ads.pac or a filtering proxy such as BFilter or Privoxy if you want it to be multi-browser) and perhaps also using Opera or Firefox with the imglikeopera extension (with Forced image expiration set to a reasonable value, which, in your case, could be between 1 hour to a week).

Is it what exactly you see pixellated? Everything on your desktop or just stuff in your web browser?

From your basic desktop (no windows or programs open), right click and select 'Properties'.

In the window that appears, click on the tab that says 'Settings', then click the button that says 'Advanced'.

In the 'General' tab, there should be a drop down menu for DPI setting. Change this to 96 (it probably says 120 at the moment).

Click OK.

Your computer will want to restart. Do that and it may well solve your problem.

(Edit: Sorry Digitalfailure, just realised you'd pointed in this direction)
 
I remember reading somewhere that pictures on the internet will come out pixellated while it's still trying to upload on a slow dial up connection. This occurs in order to reduce loading times. I think Firefox has that feature, but not too sure about IE (usually pictures come ups "line by line" on in there).

I hope you can all see what I can see, else i'll just feel foolish!!

If its just the internet connection, which is ridculously slow, then i can cope with that, however frustarting, I move in two weeks, and will return to the world of broadband!!

The screenshots look pretty nasty here, and they do look like the DPI is set to the wrong value, or the resolution is set wrong (selecting the highest value doesn't always give you a better result).
 
any chance you can plug the machine in at work/a friends with bb connection so you can confirm or discount the connection? If pics viewed from your hard drive are ok, could indeed be a connection issue, pressumably you are getting the same thing on other websites with images?
