Good morning all

I'll be travelling to and having a few days in Exeter with work in mid October, don't know the area so wondered what there was down there apart from the sea to shoot?

Like follies, architecture but not really a street shooter

ive been looking at Dawlish, on google maps it doesn't look a massive drive tbh

Dawlish is potentially good for the cliffs on the right as you look out to sea, the railway line running right next to the sea, the black swans in the park in the centre, and perhaps some characters for street-style. We lived there for a few months in winter while I was working at the Met Office in Exeter (which allows public entry for tours if interested).

Wildlife Reserve at Dawlish Warren if that's of interest.

Just back from doing a presentation at Exeter CC last week - Bridport and West Bay are less than an hour away, which is one place I ventured to. Check out Fingle Bridge as well, for Autumn colours.

There are a few follies and the like on and around the Powderham estate as well as there being a few interesting sites in the city itself (Stepcote Hill, the House that Moved, the old city walls, the old Exe Bridge, the Quay area [although that's not the same as it used to be when it was used in the Onedin Line etc!]) Now we're out of the main tourist season, Exmouth, Budleigh, Dawlish [and Dawlish Warren] are relatively quiet. If wild birds are your bag, have a look at Topsham Flats, where there's an RSPB (I think) hide/information centre. Topsham itself is also quite photogenic, although parking can be an issue. If you have a day to spare (well, a day won't really be enough!), the Moor (Dartmoor) isn't far away - see @Topsy 's posts for inspiration.

Haldon Belvedere is just a short distance, Powderham, NT properties Castle Drogo, Knightshayes and Killerton all within a 20 minute drive.
Dartmouth is an easy drive.

Some ideas for architecture in Exeter...

The Iron Bridge is a spectacular piece of engineering that most people miss. It's about 5 minutes walk north from the Cathedral...

Walking back up the hill from the Iron Bridge, turn left into the Guildhall Centre. It's largely ghastly '70s tatt but there are some interesting survivals, like the back entrance into Marks and Spencer...

Back in the High Street, walk east until you come to Sidwell Street and keep going until you reach York Road. Look up from the corner and you'll see the spectacular tower of the Methodist Church...

Walk back towards the west and down towards the river along Fore Street. Just before you reach the modern Exe Bridge, look to your left and you'll see the remains of the old bridge, now sitting on dry land. It's a bit battered but then again, it is 800 years old...
