if you crop or edit an image before putting it on photobucket will that cause the exif date to go missing or will resizing on photobucket cause lose of data?

Probably Photobucket that strips it but try this.

Take one of your photo's and reduce it. Save it to disk, Check if the exif is still there. Then load it up to Photobucket again and see again if it's there.

I must admit I like it when people leave Exif data, it's usefull as a learning tool.

Mine also has personal and copyrite data embeded.

Yup I know it can be stripped but when did anyone want to bother on crap pictures :D

I use photobucket and it does not strip the exif.

If you use save for web in Photoshop that WILL strip the exif.

Do your cropping, and all your PP and then just save as a 800 pixel by whatever (533 or 600 normally) @ 72dpi jpg. Then when you save to photobucket your exif data will show!

Julian ...are you using Firefox as your browser

just found a good add-in called Fxif which shows the exif data on images on TP

Not if you enable the option to keep EXIF intact. :)

DPI is irrelevant.

DPI is irrelevant.

True but for posting on the web anything greater than 72dpi is wasted and just uses up bandwidth.

A full frame image saved for this forum would be 800x533x72dpi, anything larger is just wasted!

No, a 300x300pixel image is identical on screen, and stores no more or less data, regardless of whether it's at 72dpi or 300dpi. It's still the same number of pixels and the same number of bytes. :)

i did some pp on a shot and resized in photofiltre
i uploaded to imageshack and then downloaded the link to my laptop and saved on my hard drive
the exif was still there

as stated if you save to web on photoshop the exif is stripped

You learn something new every day. The image size just changes with the change in dpi, I never realised that it never made a difference to a web image, but after thinking about it it's obvious really!

Yeah, 72DPI really has become an obsolete "standard". When you consider that a monitor can change its own DPI any time it likes by simply changing resolution, there is no standard any more. :)

Tbh not sure? But exif is a great tool for finding out how and when the shot was taken. Must admit I use save for web in PS ... just a bit of lazy PP in my case. :D

Thanks for the response folks. I have been thinking I tend to pp using a mixture of photoplus and picassa and photobucket. could the mixture be losing it? I use ie not firefox on main pc. on the laptop i use fire fox but very rarely use the laptop for pp.

put firefox on the pc...you wont regret it...and find both browsers friendly
i cant get on with IE now

Posting on another forum, discovered that anything over 190k the EXIF gets stripped. Not sure if the same thing here.

Just found from elsewhere that it seems that it's Picasa that is stripping the data

quote from there

I send my picture from Picasa to my on line picasa alblum, from there I copy my proporties and paste it into the Image....then all that is shown is a modification date

The requirement was for EXIF to be left in the pic

BTW I'm told that the new Flikr layout is most confusing :(
