I have just got an expodisc clone and have a little question about setting the custom white balance, on my 30D

I understand that
a) put the expodisc on
b) then take a photo
c) in camera menu set use custom white balance using the said photo
d) set >< on the white balance menu on top of camera

What I don't know is what white balance setting do I shoot for stage b)

Hope that makes sense

i think if you shoot it on awb

that will be fine

just set the correct exposure then shoot and change..

if i am wrong i am sure some nice member will be along to put us both on the right track..

Yep that right.

Camera set to AWB take shot with Expodisk on.

Camera set to Custom WB. Then select the image that you took as the one to use.

Really useful bit of kit. Makes a huge difference when in dark rooms.

Thanks guys, that what I was doing.

At £3.53 inc p+p for a 77mm one, it was worth a punt even if I hardly use it.

Fairly simple explanation, your camera has some preset values for the sorts of conditions we will shoot in, none will exactly match the conditions.

If you open any RAW image into photoshop you will get an initial raw image editing screen, this will have a white balance/temperature slider, you can move it to whereever you think it should be but you have no way of knowing if it is right.

Using your expodisc will solve this problem, such that the camera will get it right. Put that thing round your neck and use it as soon as you think conditiones may have changed.

If you are photographing stage, then try to get your first cuastom setting under white lights, you wont need to do it again all night.

To answer the question, it makes no difference. The camera knows what the parameters are when the test exposure is made and makes the necessary adjustments regardless.

Says so in the (Canon) instruction book.
