I have been reading lots to try and get a better understanding of exposure and compensations and "stuff"

BUT...!

When you use exposure compensation, what is it using to compensate, is it ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed or a preset combination of all.

Or something else, is it like using the exposure slider in Lightroom...?

Please be kind with your answers to my simpleton question...!

Just remember LADS, Light=Add and Dark=Subtract

So if you were taking a picture of a snow dominated scene you would need to add compensation and vice versa for a predominantly dark coloured shot

If, and I assume it is, the same on Nikon as Canon, if you add or subtract exposure comp when in Av mode, it adjusts the shutter speed.
Try adjusting while watching the setting for shutter speed - you should see it increase or decrease. Hope this helps.

Never thought of that i was thinking of in M mode so fully manual, what would it add to there..!

Nothing - although the in camera meter reading will change. (on Nikon anyway)

Manual is manual - if you want exposure comensation, dial it in yourself!

In Tv mode it will adjust the aperture
In Av mode it will adjust the shutter speed
In manual it doesn't adjust anything (that's the whole point of manual - you have control)

In full automatic mode, it just shifts the exposure along the algorithm curve. Whether this will affect the aperture or shutter speed depends where are you start on the curve.

Thanks, i think that is what i understood i just could not find it written down anywhere...
