The moment you put a 2x extender on, f/2.8 becomes f/5.6. Always.
But you'd be a mug to use an extender until you've run out of reach with the bare lens, and of course you can do 140mm without it, at f/2.8 and with better image quality.
Hi
Thanks guys, I just can't make up my mind whether to get a 70- 200 II or a 100-400 L.
I use mostly at large end for wildlife when I am away working, but like the sound of the f2.8 when back home, can't justify both !

I have the 70-200/2.8L IS II and a 2x extender (mk2), and even though the new 70-200 is really really nice and works well with the 1.4x, wouldn't really recommend the 2x combo to anyone. It's passable in an emergency but I rarely even take the 2x with me.
If you think the extender will be needed most of the time, buy the 100-400 or 400/5.6 instead. If it's just occasional use, get the 1.4x and crop
