Hello again

Sorry for more questions but I want to get hold of a set of extension tubes for my canon 450d and wasn't sure which ones would continue to allow the AF etc to be used. My budget is low so I can't go for canon originals!

Also I am considering getting an ND4 and ND8 filter and wondered which brands to choose (again budget dependent!) :D

thanks very much
Nancy :)

Opteka do a set that auto af I seem to remember, about £70.00.
Can't help with the NDs though, long time since I bought one new! Usually go second hand on the forum.

Yeah I'd rather get second hand ones but only have a week before I go away for 3 months so need to get them asap so unless I'm very lucky and some come up I'll have to buy new :(

Leaving it a bit late! Have a look on ebay for ones that finish soon, pay for next day delivery and you might have a chance!

There is a set of Jessops Auto Extension Tubes for £75 in the for sale section. Canon, Kenko or jessops are all pretty much the same. There's no glass in them so no IQ difference.

Hello again

I can't seem to get the Jessop's extension tubes to work with my canon 100 - 400 lens. It tries to Autofocus but won't. I thought these tubes still allowed auto focusing... am I doing something wrong?

When I had my 100-400 I used tubes quite often. I found the best way to use them was manual focus as they really did hunt. The 100-400 is well documented for liking good light. Each tube looses you light and so the ability to focus decreases.

Ah ok. So it wouldn't help to get different tubes?

The tubes say they are for "EFs" lenses but the 100 - 400 is an EF (have I got that the right way round?) - could that be it?

I though they were OK with EF lens' but I could be wrong. I've got Kenko tubes and they work with my EF lens' not sure I ever tried them with EF-S

How close are you to the subject? Try getting closer - see if it manages to focus. I can only use one at a time or the 12mm & 20mm to AF once I start stacking it just constantly hunts. To be honest, it's much easier to manual focus - or move the camera backwards or forwards ever so slightly.

Edit; regarding the filters. I picked up an Cokin ND Grad kit + 67mm adaptor ring from Amazon for around £65 delivered the next day. Came with ND2, ND4 & ND8. Quite happy with it so far, though I haven't really had time to play with it due to work.

Thanks everyone.
I'll have another play in the morning - perhaps I'm not focusing close enough. I'm new to these tubes so it's not something I've tried before
:)

ETA: thanks for the tip about the filters :)

I had the same problem when I first tried them, you more than likely need to get ALOT closer to your subjects, however i've only been using the 18-70mm kit lens with tubes @ 70mm

Yep - it works now! I had no idea how close I had to get :D I'm such a plonker!
I managed to get the 100 - 400 lens to work with the smallest tube. I'll try with my kit lens later I think but all seems ok now!

Thanks everyone
