External Flash Q

Yes
Hey all, I've unearthed an old Sigma EF-430 external flash..in the manual it said it worked with all Canon EOS cameras, so I plonked it onto my 40D and tried to configure settings and it said "incompatible flash".

I'm assuming now that the flash is actually for film cameras and not DSLRs..can anyone enlighten me and am I really going to have spend on a Speedlite in the end!?

Cheers all.

It means it worked with all EOS cameras current at the time the flash was manufactured. Things have moved on. Even older Canon guns are not fully compatible with the latest Canon cameras.

Yes, you will probably end up buying a modern Speedlite. They are very good, loads of functions and easy to use. That old gun will certainly fire and will function fine in at least that minimal respect, but how many other functions it will have... well, maybe not many at all :(

Thanks for the response.

Yeah, makes sense. Wasn't quite sure when it was manufactured though.

Yes, it does fire fine - but obviously doesn't have the functionality. Ah well - it'll be worth the purchase I'm sure!

Cheers

just buy some fleabay triggers and use it off camera...;)

Just a little note as a warning to others reading this.
If you come across an old flash, DO NOT just blindy put it on your DSLR. Not all flashes work, and some many even kill your camera due to overly high voltages.

Always check a website such as this one (Although I think that's quite an old list now).

Oooh, that is a good idea!
Any specific ones anyone would recommend?

Cheers all who responded.
:D

Cheap and fairly reliable I would go with Cactus V4's from Gadget Infinity or if you want super dooper reliability and ETTL then PocketWizards but you will have to pay dearly for the features.......

Oh right - well I guess I was lucky there! Shan't be doing that again
Thanks very much for that information.

I'm not looking for something too expensive, otherwise I may aswell just buy a flash. Just looking for something to tide me over until I have enough for a flash after I've got some other bits I'm looking at.

Cheers, I'll check them out!

The list that Marcel linked, shows the flash should be okay to use with EOS cameras but just to be safe - when I'm using these triggers I won't have any chance of any problems?

Many thanks
