Yes
I am looking to get some extra RAM for my imac 27” 5k 2017 which came with 8gb installed as standard , looking to get 2 x 16 gb 2400mhz ddr4cards to give me 40 gb in total .
Anyone got any recommendations for suppliers , best prices etc?
Cheers ,Rob.

If you do videos intensively, you may use that capacity,
but for photo only, it is excessive. 16 are quite enough.

That’s good to know Kodiak thank you it will save me some pennies!

Just got myself a new iMac 27" i7 5K and, for my workflow
for photos only, I built it up to 16 and that 's plenty.

Just replace the 8gb with the 32gb. 16gb is generally sufficient but nice to have a bit of headroom (photoshop will use as much as it can get hold of too).

Then sell the 8gb to regain some cash.

The price of ram right now is crazy. I'd hold off for a while.

Will it void Apple warranty if you use any RAM other than Apple approved RAM.
They seem like that sort of business to me.

There are many resellers and brands on the market but not so many
chips manufacturers. Apple sells RAM but at an astronomical price…
so third party is a good strategy.

Apple sold or else, IF the RAM caused the problem, the warranty is
still valid as they are all made according to Apple specs.

The third party ram wont be covered by warranty or applecare obviously but should not void the main machines cover.

The models that have the ram access hatch are classed as "user upgradable" so unless you're completely ham-fisted and bend a pin it should be fine.

Yes, that's what I clumsily meant… thanks Neil!

If you need warranty support just put the RAM back to 8GB (obviously keep the old RAM) before you claim.

It's just under a cover on the back, unlike my 21.5".

Bloody hell, you are not kidding, I paid £85 for 2 x 8 gig last year... no way would I pay £177 for the exact same stuff 6 month later, https://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-r...n-hyperx-impact-ddr4-pc4-19200-2400mhz-sodimm definitely hold off to let prices go down a bit.

Good memory - always the correct ones as well.

16Gb is OK, 32Gb is good depending on how many layers you run in photoshop, other apps open at the same time etc.
