A penny has just dropped.

Film does not see what our eyes see. Our eyes, well mine at least, can average out huge differences in dynamic range and even them out. Film cannot. Its kind of recording one stop differences as huge steps. My eyes seem to be able to sort one stop differences into kind of a tenth of a stop.

Has this ever been measured, I know one of you guys will know all about it.

I feel like my eyes have been opened !

This is because our eye/brain combination interprets brightness on a logarithmic scale, while film for the the most part (with the exception of shoulders at extreme ends) responds linearly to image brightness.

When you look around in a scene, your eyes and brain adjust so you can see detail in both shadow and highlight areas, apparently at the same time. It's not the same time though - the shift in focal point allows the exposure adjustment to happen pretty damn quickly!

I am struggling with depth of field also, my eyes can see a distinct depth of field at intermediate distances but when I want to take the shot in 35mm everything is compressed onto a flat plane.
I cannot get any closer to use a wider lens due to various reasons, so its a no go. The image just does not work "flat"

That's worked for you Brian, I am positive that it would not have been luck.

Thanks Wayne but I'm not an expert .....I just think the trick for possible looking 3d landscapes etc is light direction so a rule of the thumb is never shoot at midday and of course what's in the subject helps. And debatable in that I find some lenses give you more luck for 3D?????
