Facebook advice pleae

A few months ago facebook let people register their facebook page with their own name on a first come first served basis.
For example someone's facebook page could be www.facebook.com/174536748
but you could change it to www.facebook.com/yourname to make it easier for people to find you.

Cheers thanks, but I meant your name being xxxPhotography, not just the name in the address bar

Gary, so how did you get your name fit 2 frame?

I don't think it matters to be honest. I chose business/professional service when I set mine up but a good friend of mine set his up as an artist page. they look identical (apart from the content of course;)).

Check out other members pages from that link and see what and how they do things .. make yourself a fan too, it all helps :)

You can't get better than a bit of free advertising

I've never quite got Facebook, all I seem to get is invites to join groups so the Zods can battle to save the planet Tharg from the Pertens or some such rubbish. Seems like a complete waste of time.

True Ken, it can be like that a lot of the time but its like emails, sort through all the spam to find the decent stuff. I find it useful for keeping in touch with widespread family and friends. The photography page is just an added bonus that I use more like a free blog.

I dont understnad why you would have your business on FB and use it as a big source of advertising, chances are that people who know you will already know what you do, so why bother? There are lots of ways of promoting yourself without promoting yourself to your mates and long lost classmates. Yes its a tool, but not one that I would push as much as other methods

Praise be, I agree with Matty again..................

If I was dependant on photography, yes, there would be many better ways for self promotion. Why bother? Why not? It's free, and it gives people a chance to ask questions without the hassle of emails etc. The answers are open for everyone to see and for people that dont know you i.e searched for photographers in your locale, the way you respond can give them an insight on the type of person you are. How approachable, helpful and polite.

Dont you sometimes wish that the way you conduct yourself in here could be communicated through your website? similar thing ;)

not everyone uses facebook
I dont disagree with having a business page, I just think there are better ways to advertise
I dont understand your last point, mainly because this IS my website :p

It is just one more method of getting your name out there. Also, it's not just your friends, it's friends of friends who also see any interaction they have with you. Two hundred friends quickly grows into a big audience when you factor in the whole network.

Yeah thats a fair point, I'll give you that one, but lets look at it in a different way.

I dont look at all the stuff that pops up on facebook, im sure im not the only one, in fact some of it annoys me intently

If I want something, I use google. I just tried an experiment, I googled for a service in an area where I know a friend of mine on facebook is, no results with that persons business in the first 8 pages, but lots of other peoples businesses come up. If I search for the exact name it comes up on page 1 with the facebook page..people who NEED my service cant find it unless they are on facebook.

Asive said, im not saying its a stupid idea, but I cant think of lots of free ways to get much more publicity

Luke Woodford has 2,605 fans on facebook at the last count so i would have thought facebook may be more popular than just having a flickr pro account, because you can interact with people better with the layout.

Hmm interesting, I've just ran an experiment and done a FB search for photography in a location and it only comes up with groups, not pages. So maybe that's the way to go.

I've also just found the Dec 2009 user stats for the UK, here... http://www.clickymedia.co.uk/2009/12/uk-facebook-user-statistics-december-2009/ 23 million active UK users ...

That's a lot of free advertising.

I'm not saying that people should only use FB to advertise, just that it is another avenue worth exploring.

Exactly, I wouldn't expect anyone to rely on facebook as the only means of advertising. I got 60 odd hits on my website referred from facebook in the last month. The more links you have, from more relevant sites, helps to increase the relevance (google wise) of your own site. So I wouldn't discount even a couple of referrals from such a large site. It all helps.

As for google searches or facebook searches for your page, that's not really how facebook works (for me at least, but I have a feeling other people are the same). I never search facebook for something, or someone. There are just too many people on facebook and the search isn't that good. I rely on looking what my friends, or friends of friends are doing and interact with new content that way.

I do however agree with artyman, depending on your friends you can get sent a lot of invites for all sorts of crap. I have filtered out the friends who send me crap and hidden all the 'farmville' or similar updates from the news feed.

:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang: my heads hurting.

So all you folk that have a facebook presence, in order to get your "xxxxx Photography" name to appear where normally your personal name would appear, did you open a personal profile in Facebook then add an artists page?

This is really starting to do my head in, so I'll hit it one more time :bang:

Just tried to rename my account and ended up with this,
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Basildon-United-Kingdom/Celebrations-Photography/246478363044
anyone know what I've done wrong?

Pete

I think it's because you don't have enough fans. When you do, you will loose the word "pages" and also the numbers that come after the word "Photography".

Not sure how many fans you need but I thought it was 100, but I've seen some one with only 76 fans and it was ok for them.

I've only found tis out by hours of time trawling other peoples facebook pages etc, beggining to wish I'd never started :bang:
