Fake Nikon Battery

I bought a Nikon EN-EL3E battery from ebay. It was cheap so took a gamble on if it was real or fake. Got it today and yes its a fake, what a suprise. Looks identical to a real one even down to the box and instructions, the only thing missing is a code number and a few other minor things which give it away. That and the plastic feels cheap compared to my other official nikon ones.

My question is. Can these fake batteries be a danger to the camera, ie putting out incorrect voltages etc? Does anyone have experience in using these knock offs?

Report the seller to Ebay and claim your money back from Paypal or Ebay.
 
I got one off ebay too..
Paid 35 pounds for that..
Don't know if it is real or not...
But has original box...
 
I can't speak for Nikon but I've used compatible batteries on a Canon 1DIIN without any problems at all. I'm pretty sure neither Nikon nor Canon actually make batteries! I suppose it depends on how it was sold? as a genuine one or as a compatible.

I found no difference in performance at all.

Most of the ones on Ebay from UK sellers are fakes, same with the lens caps. Although they just fall off, they won't wreck your camera....

There's a difference between a compatible one @ £5 and one in a fake Nikon box for £35 ;)

True. You were quick I'd just edited my original comment to say it depended on how it was sold. If I'd been sold one as the genuine article I'd be pretty miffed!

I'm pretty convinced the 90% (figure plucked out of thin air) Nikon accesories on Ebay are fake. I've seen them all, batteries, lens caps.

The box designs can be very good, but the give aways are the holograms and the text vs. an original. I just don't buy "Nikon" accesories because they will almost certainly be fake.

I'm happy to buy an honest OEM battery / cap, but not one dressed up as the real thing...
 
often its better to buy the fake ones anyway. the often have a higher MAH than the official ones. i have 2 and they all last longer than my official batteries
 
I can't tell any difference between my Nikon & 'Phottix' battery. The Phottix is rated slightly higher in fact...

The big difference is obviously the price ;)

If you look at the hologram there should be 4 notches cut out of it, have they both got that? The box colour doesn't look right - is it really that dark a gold colour?

Both ebay one and D90 one has 4 notches at the hologram on the battery!
Well I forgot what the box looks like now as I put it in the D90 box and packed it away
 
I bought a battery for my D40 which turned out to be fake and that had a hologram that looked just like the genuine article. After a few charges it barely held a charge so was confined to the bin.

Liklihood of damaging your camera using a dodgy battery is very very low but there must be a risk when charging them - not only to your charger but some of the modern battery chemicals pose quite a fire risk when being charged too.

You would be ok with a third party battery from genuine manufacturer though if you don't fancy paying out sometimes 25% of the camera cost for a single nikon battery.

I got a "Nikon" D60 battery that was the same - 60 shots tops.

I complained to the Ebay seller, and to be fair he refunded. I binned it.

IMHO any batteries claiming to be the real thing but significantly less will be fakes - ie a "Nikon EN-EL9" for 99p+£11.99 postage from HK WILL be fake.
 
I find OEM batteries pretty good, got all mine from 7dayshop. I still use them in a battery grip- just in case there is a problem, I haven't lost a body :)
 
Just bear in mind the fact that Nikon recalled all their EN EL3 batteries a few years ago because some were overheating and there was a risk ( however slight) that they could get so hot they could damage the camera. I wouldnt take the risk on a too cheap Nikon battery, you dont know how safe they are.

i bought a fake battery for my nikon d40x ages ago, no complaints here still works pretty..

I think its a hit or miss thing really, at least with a genuine one you got better chance it`ll last.
 
I have just bought a Duracell version from play.com.

It was £18 inc posting and arrived in 2 days. Its a lot cheaper than the official (non fake) Nikon batteries and less of a risk than an unbranded battery (imho)

Thats a good price and definitely alot less risk.
 
I have no trouble using oem batteries ... It is not as if Canon and Nikon make their own anyway.

The thread here is not about 3rd party batteries - its about batteries that are sold as genuine Nikon batteries, but are counterfeit.
 
Just measured the volts the fake is putting out compared to my official nikon battery.

Both were fully charged.

Fake: + 8.33v, S 3.29v
Real: + 7.99v, S 0v

Im not sure what the "S" terminal stands for on the batteries but as you can see for some reason the fake is putting out 3.29v compared to the 0v on the official.
