I've booked my trip to Northumberland in May with a view of a couple of visits to the Farne Islands.

I'll be running a 40D (and maybe a 50D). My lens collection includes the Canon 70-300, Sigma 24-70, and Canon 50mm F1.8. I'm thinking of picking up a 70-200 f4 before I go as well.

I also have access to a 100-400, I know it's heavy, but would it be a good idea to take it ??

Any suggestions appreciated.

I think I would take the 100-400.

100-400 is useful for puffins coming in from afar. I took a 500 prime last time and used it quite a lot!

Also, make sure you take your 24-70 if you go to Inner Farne as the terns get very close

I'd be tempted to take a full range of focal lengths but avoid duplicating where possible. So with your lenses I'd pick 24-70 and definitely the 100-400 for the reach. If you picked up a 70-200 take that too although with the above 2 lenses you have all realistic needs covered.

I was just speaking to a guy who's thinking of hiring our Sigma 300-800 to take to Farne. He says last time he went he had 400mm on a crop-sensor and it wasn't really enough. (And since then he's "upgraded" to a D3 .... doh!)
