Favicon?

For the life of me I can't quite work out how to make it appear. I have a couple of wordpress sites and I have added the .ico file to both the root directory of the sites as well as in the theme dashboard to no avail. Any wordpress/web experts out there that can help?

This needs to be in the page header:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://website/file location" type="image/x-icon">

It's usually easiest to put the ico file in the root of the website (therefore no long URLs needed).

I got caught out once because although I'd put the favicon in the right place (this was with a Joomla site), because of my cache it wasn't showing for me, but it was for everyone else - just a thought.
