Recently I'm editing quite a lot of 4K from my R5, on my Macbook 13 M1. Due to the size of the files, I'm storing the files and the project on an external My Passport WD 5TB HD. I noticed that when playing back in FCP it does a lot of stuttering, and doesn't play back smoothly. Reckon it's the HD or...?

Generally, I've been more than impressed with the M1 16GB Macbook, it's certainly a ton better than the 32GB i9 I had previously but... suggestions?
 
Likely is the read speed of the WD disk. I'd use the Blackmagic speed test app to find out the speed you have and the speed you need for 4k editing. Most likely putting your footage on an SSD for editing would work much better.
