What if any is the difference betwen FEC and adjusting flash power. The reason I ask is that I was at a gig last night where i was allowed to use flash. Generally I don't like it and I didn't last night, I used FEC and camera in manual. Typically 1/60 and F4 but bounce didn't work very high and dark ceilings in a converted church. I wondered whether adjusing power would be more flexible?

Ta!

If your camera is in manual mode and flash on auto (E-TTL II), you would use FEC to compensate for the automatically metered flash exposure (camera exposure is fixed as it is set to manual). You are basically telling the flash to increase/decrease the output from the automatically metered value by the specified amount.

Setting the flash power manually makes your exposure (camera and flash) completely manual as you are removing all metering out of the equation. That might work depending on the shooting conditions and should be fine as long as the shooting position and light doesn't change much.
