Film Photographer of the year 2023, Discussion Thread

Just to clarify the rules.

As mentioned I will be entering wet printed results as I no longer possess a dedicated negative scanner.

I have a 3in 1 thingy so perhaps I will manage to scan the actual print through that though I have never tried.

If not, am I allowed to simply take and post a pic of the print with my phone ( like I generally do in the image sharing threads here on TP) , or is that unacceptable ?
Yes, it's no different to using a digital camera to "scan" positives such as slides in my opinion.

Well, I helped prep some of today's big lunch the missus done for a thousand people and noticed the sun was nice, soft & hazy.

Got a nod to pop out :)

Shot digital [January's] & film for the POTY stuff & another little project type thing [digital] I want to start - nothing serious that one, just something to get us out the house :)

Anyway, I shot something for decay, symmetrical & urban plus I have some stuff from late December which was long exposure. I'm on frame 17 out of 24 so this year looks more promising than last years already! We are off outside of Bristol tomorrow so maybe even something rural!

I will try not to ignore those themes though. It's always good to keep looking & thinking of suitable, possibly better images. My issue is normally finishing & getting the roll developed on time to submit [which is why I failed miserably last year] so at least with 'something' for the first few months it should hopefully take some pressure off & stop me from throwing the towel in so easily :)

The January 2023 entries thread is open

My entery did not happen, Way to COLD for me this month , Most days below zero :coldfeet:

Black decaying fingertips will make a good image to enter ! :ROFLMAO:

( Says him who has yet to make an effort to get off the starting block )

Erm what's the shortest time for "long exposure", as 7 secs is a long time for me o_O

It's all relative (bit like probity in public life).

I seem to recall it's any exposure that is longer than that which would normally be used to "freeze" action. So, perhaps 20 seconds for gentle waves, 2 second for a runner, 1/10th second for a car. Yer pays yer money, yer takes yer choice

If "long exposure" was in Jan, I could have taken shots of fireworks for trhe new year and took quite a few in past years at 7 secs ............Oh well.

You could, the shots can be taken anytime from 1st Dec 22 to the last day of the theme month. I have shots stacked for Feb through to Aug plus Dec all on one film, I may not use them if I get something better but I can if I need to. I actually tried to get all 12 themes on one roll of 35mm but the Dec/Jan weather was against me so I only managed 9 themes.

FROM THE FPOTY rules thread:

QUOTE :A photo may be taken from 1st December 2022, until the final day of the month for that theme. For example, January’s entry may be taken between 1st December 2022 and 31st January 2023, and October’s entry can be taken between 1st December 2022 and 31st October 2023.:END QUOTE

I done the same for a few themes. Mainly for the closest months!

Well yes so new years fireworks would have been useful for me if "long exposure" was in Jan instead of decay.....just saying

You’re both well organized …… I haven’t even thought outside of the January theme yet  :$
Don't know about well organised but tight ar*ed for sure I was trying to get all 12 themes on one film but failed. I have rushed some of the themes so may finish up re-doing them but I'll use 120 for those since I normally finish a roll on an outing and plan at least one outing per month. In any event I have the first ones as "back up".

You can shoot the topics at any time of the year Brian, not just in the month itself. You could have done the new year fireworks and not posted until February, similar to @Topsy having already shot 9 topics on one film for posting throughout the year.

Submit whatever you think is appropriate and let the public decide by voting ;)

I suspect the intention is really "motion blur" but a night shot would be equally valid IMHO

Now there's a challenge, shoot 12 themes on 120 6x6 - so 12 frames
I could go with that … it would make me get use out of the yashica .

A bummer if human error was to stuff a frame though :wideyed:

As for the FPOTY , I haven’t given up hope ….. yet!!
I still have 4 days, to get myself on location, expose a sheet of film, and produce a wet print from the negative, so no stress:runaway::runaway::runaway: :help::LOL:

That's what we like.

Optimism :)

At a push I could maybe get away with a contact print , or easier still i could expose a paper negative .

Both those methods would , in theory , make the printing side slightly easier/quicker

My entry is a paper negative, so I can confirm it's quick and easy. (y)

Sometime just before or just after the plague spoiled the fun, there was a thread on here about doing something similar, basically telling a story with a single roll, contact sheet to be provided (IIRC). I still have it in the back of my mind as something to try

... one year

... ... maybe

I remember that one, if it were to re-appear I might give it a try. A while back I did create a couple of computer made contact sheets from 2 of my Dartmoor Photowalks with the Bronica from the scans of the films.

Nuns Cross Farm and Bleak House on Portra 400 (with some bracketing for safety).

Bronica Contact Sheet from Bleak House Portra 400.jpg

Wistmans Wood on Portra 400 (no bracketing, took my brave pills that day (or stupid pills)).

Actually it's a double challenge to get the exposure reasonably right esp for night shots..but I found with advanced cameras set to AV on a tripod (for still shots at night) and they are quite good which helps wasting too much film with trial and error.
Just one of the shots shot I took a few years ago letting the camera do the work and hope to have another go of a church erm which was a failure at the time :(

Ren & Stimpy were a staple of my youth. I love kids shows that aren't really for kids... The Magic Roundabout was similar.

Now to find an elephant .

Well how else am I supposed to get a 12x16 fiber print pressed flat within a 24 hour period ?!!!

Entry is posted.

It’s as good as it’s gunna get for this month!

@Topsy NO COMMENTS in the Entries thread PLEASE

This is the second time, it could be seen as an attempt to influence the voting ...

Really sorry Chris @sirch I'm honestly not trying to influence anything I just get carried away with the banter. :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
No worries

January voting is open for 7 days

Really good to see lots of entries this month
