Filter lenses

Hello all. First time poster here. And a total newbie to photography.
Bought myself a Canon EOS 500d at Xmas (Santa didn't take the hint)
I'm looking to do some long exposure shots during daylight and have been
Advised to purchase a nd8 filter lens. Is this correct? Is there maybe a kit of different lenses which would achieve various results?
Also I'm pretty sure I need a 58mm lens?

As a new starter then yes, nd8 is a god place to begin.

If you don't mind a bit of DIY you can use welding glass to get even logner shots.

Another longer exposure filter is the Big Stopper

For starting out and trying, just get what you can afford. The Lee big stopper is around 80ukp ish mark. The Welding glass is around 10ukp ish (welding glass, adapter ring, blu tac...)

You can get step up rings with your lenses filter on one side and the filters thread on the other (depending on your lens...) But if you have only one lens then get a filter that matches it

If you mean exposures like a few seconds in normal daylight, then ND8 is not what you want.

ND8 is three stops and you need 8-10 stops. Ten stops is is ND1024 and will knock a 1/1000sec exposure down to 1 full second.

Check out B+W, Heliopan, LightCraftWorkshop, Hoya, Haida. Density is marked in different ways, eg ten stops is also ND1000 or 3.0.
