does anybody know the best way to get a filter off a lens that is basically not coming off at all, it won't even turn. :(

i plan on takeing it to a photography shop to get it off - but i just wondered if anybody had any other ideas!

the filter did fit the lens nicely and it was on it for a few months on and off for cleaning.

Press it face down on a rubber mat and turn the lens. Daft as it sounds the side of the spare tyre on your car will work too. Often when you grasp the filter with your hands you can actually distort it slightly and this makes it harder to remove.

i couldn't find a rubber mat, but i did find a diflated yoga ball (can you tell im desperate to get it off) which didn't work!

hmm - i might have to go buy a rubber mat, hmm will floar lino do?

Get your girlfriend to do it.

Or just bash it on the pavement.

i'm female :D
and i have tried again and again to get it off lol

my bf has even tried to - he is being extra gentle, because he knows i will go crazy at him if he breaks my lens lol

oh and i been very tempted to bash it off things as well lol :bonk:

I just knew that was going to happen ;-)

Actually, DigitalRelish had a much more sensible suggestion - I was vaguely aware those things existed. Can't do any harm and for £2.99 it has to be worth a punt.

Have you got a pair of water-pump pliers? They open up to a fair size in diameter and should be able to give you the leverage needed...

If you do try the job with a pair, gently does it and bung a tea towel over the lens to prevent the jaws marking the filter, or indeed the lens should it slip!

i don't but the bf is a handy man so he might!

i would be nervous about using one though because of damaging the lens!

knowing me - i probably would end up destroying the lens! :bonk:

thanks for the advice though! :D

The do look a bit over-kill & brutal, however it's down to the person using them that controls the grip-pressure. That coupled with the long handles will give an ideal lever-arm which is what's needed. So, it would be minimal straining etc using these, as opposed to mega-gripping, pushing, twisting to try and force the filter to turn. Obviousley, your call at the ned of the day, as it's your lens! :)

filter wrenches worked for me. And try tapping it gently with a wooden spoon before you try and twist it off - I think that helps loosen the threads slightly.

I had one a couple of years ago that just would not move. I had to carefully break the filter glass.Very carefully! Then removed the glass and the filter ring then collapsed as I tried to undo it again. The lens was fine.
Rather wreck a filter than the lens.

Kev.

Get a wide rubber band thats slightly smaller than filter diameter ,place it on the filter ring ,try gentle twisting at first ,if that doesn't work ,gradually increase pressure .Worked for me

Tip for sticking filter ,rub your finger behind your(oops)ear :D ,sounds yucky i know but needs must ,everyone has oil in their skin ,anyways.... after you've dabbed your finger ,rub this onto the threads of either the threads of filter or lens ,no more sticking filter .

Have you got a mat with a rubber back? or a car mat? or the sole of a shoe/slippers?
If you press down hard and steady on the lens it will be OK
I don't want to insult you or your BF but are you turning the lens the right way? you need to turn it anti-clockwise.

If you grip the sides of the filter it will make it harder to come off.

This will sound mad - but cool it down just a little.

Hard to do? Not really - rest the lens filter down on a bag of frozen peas and they try to gently remove the filter - rubberm mat method will work a treat here just don't press down too hard.

Which lens and filter are you talking about?

Behind your what? I have to know, the suspense is killing me

I agree with this and the rubber band idea sounds good.

Make sure the lens barrel is extended as far as possible (zoom and or focus), it will give you more area to grip.

If it's a zoom ,rubber band could be fitted to barrel also ,save damage to zoom mechanism

Keep one of THESE handy... ;)

Good for lots of stuck screwy things... :D

That looks like a top bit of kit for this and other like applications

My water-pump pliers idea was similar, but suggested as a stop-gap measure with it being something the OP's BF or neighbour might have in a tool box.

any suggstions that don't involve rubber?

I'm allergic :(

got a stubborn filter that will not come off, and i need to remove it as its not appropriate for what i want to do today

THANKS I NOW HAVE NO HANDS AS THEY HAVE MELTED, AND MY FILTER IS STILL ON MY LENS :(

Sorry but that did make me laugh out loud... :cuckoo:

Seriously though... ... The tool I linked to above should mean you don't have to come into contact with the rubber... ... or is it just a proximity thing... :suspect:

are they always anti-clock wise, because i am sure mines comes off clock wise, they are cheap filters.

i tried the frozen veg idea - but it didn't work it just ripped holes in my veg bag. :bang:
doe sit have to be peas?

No, the idea is to rest the filter on the frozen peas for a few minutes to cool it down so that it contracts slightly and loosens. Then do the rubber mat trick, don't try to spin it off using the peas.

Get yourself an oxyacetylene torch, welding mask and heavy duty gloves, heat the barrel for about 30 secs then give it a good whack with a small mash hammer. If that doesnt work weld it onto the barrel and pretend it was always there anyway
