Filters for wide angle lenses

Does anybody have any advice relating to fitting screw-in filters to wide angle lenses? I have recently bought a Sigma 10-20mm (from here) and am a little concerned as to whether a 77mm screw-in UV filter would contact the front element of the lens. Obviously, I'd like to fit a filter to help protect the front element. Any advice on which type/brand of filter to use for best results (or at least lack of adverse effects?!)?

I had a Hoya UV filter on my Sigma 10-20 for a long time and wasn't over happy with the quality. Took the filter off and the images are much better. I'm just sticking with the hood.

I have a B + W UV filter on the front of my 10-20mm and have been very happy with it. They are pricey over here so check out the Hong Kong stores on ebay, you should score one for £25 to £30. Oh, they don't touch the front element of the lens either so you'll be okay and the lens cap clips onto the filters as well.

If you want to use filters, dont buy the cheap ones as they are known to degrade image quality.

I use Hoya Pro1D and B+W MRC filters.

Thanks all for your advice, all points taken.

Am I correct thinking that a UV filter is better suited to this type of lens (ie mainly for landscapes) than, say, a skylight filter?

I use a Hoya "protector" HD slimline on my Canon 10-22.
Digital cameras don't need a UV filter as they are not affected by this type of light. Only film col or B/W is affected by this light.
The "protector" is available on Ebay for about £35 in UK for 77mm size.
Bought mine earlier this month.
