No
I know this probably seems like a really amateur question, but I was just curious - how do most of you guys go about finding freelance work? (ie. weddings, magazines, etc...)

How do you think its done?

Well, it's different for every industry. My background is IT, and the quickest way to get a job is by contacting agencies and working through them.

So, I thought I'd ask and see what others are doing before I went and did it the hard way.

If there was an "easy" way, don't you think everyone would be doing it?

There is only the "hard way"...

Take photos, grimace, take better photos, send them to the the magazines, weep at the rejection letter, talk to people you meet, post photos to relevant websites/discussion forums, do favours for friends, so they tell other people, send off more photos to magazines, take more photos, sell all your Canon gear and buy Nikon (or vice versa), get rejected by more magazines, but local paper runs your photo, do your friends cousins best mates sisters wedding, keep taking photos, sell photo you took of "insert celebrity name here" doing "insert name of drug/illicit activity here" to a red-top paper, sink back into obscurity for a while, etc etc...

Mate, feed, kill, repeat as its better known

Google.

Or get a subscription to Photography Monthly, they have a brochure on making money from your photos in ever year in a 3 part series.

The reason for asking is that so many people want to make some money, and rather than thinking how to do it, they just ask on a forum.

There are many different aspects of photography, and a freelancer must apply different methods to each one. Attracting wedding clients may require attending wedding fairs, whereas sports photographers have different ways of working.

Whatever, you'll need a portfolio to show potential customers and a solid understanding of the business side of things.

Build a portfolio - do free shoots if you need to but make it professional if you want to get taken seriously. Be smart - don't make your work look like everyone elses just because you like what they do. It's being different that will get you repeat work.

And no I am not a pro - but I have a cunning plan :-)

Just apply logic. If you needed a photographer where would you look? That's where you need to be.
