Hey there, i've been studying fashion photography for a while but for my next year at university i wanted to have a look a different field. I've been researching into fine art photography but i'm a little confused, i like to work with concepts often personal and emotion is this typical of fine art photography?
I'm not very good at defining things! i often just work without thinking what my category my work fits? if that makes any sense!

^here is some recent work, i understand its always debatable, but am i on the right track?
thanks.

I'd say you're on the right track :}
Fine Art can be defined differently by everyone so it's rather vague but it's definitely conceptual. The thing with Fine Art is that what one might consider the definition another will fundamentally disagree but they all agree it's conceptual. I really quite like those shots, they look to me like Fine Art Fashion & after reading your coming from a Fashion background into Fine Art, it makes sense. Fine Art is about the ideas behind it, the thought process, & a creative interpretation.

I think those work well :} just keep finding inspiration & experimenting with what your doing! Best wishes.

thanks so much for your reply you, really cleared that one up for me, i like how vague photography can be in its definition but i have to write up about you see so i was struggling there. See all i genuinely knew about fine art was it is purely based on concept, everything i found online differs, but that is just like how everybody perception of it does, so its kinda cool.
It is so helpful to have somebody elses' view on things, cheers (:

Thanks :} I love the bottom one here on your Flickr.

I quite like how vague it can be too, it's personal & no photographers vision is the same. I come from a more creative background than professional, I just experiment & have fun with my work. Keep headed in the Fine Art direction, 'cause those two shots are working well.

If in doubt, it's Art.. The photograph as contemporary art by Charlotte Cotton (there's a link via the bookshelf in my sig) is quite a good introduction, and if you're unsure it's art a flick through that and a comparison against your images will set your mind at rest ;)

cheers alastair, i've got that book around here somewhere... going have to give our CC a proper read through it seems, thanks for you're wisdom friend.

I think my copy of that book has had more use in showing to people who argue that a particular photo isn't art.
I bought it when I was very new to photography, and the contents were quite an eye opener.
