Hi all

I have a firewire only camera and need help?

Is it possible to get a firewire to USB thingy? ... I had one that worked in a PC card slot, but the netbook I want to use doesn't have one .. do I need to use an expensive PC/Laptop then?

I would be most surprised if this worked for anything but supplying power to a device.

Firewire and USB are totally different technologies and it would require some smart logic built into the converter to make the conversion transparent at the protocol level. I can't see a device that small would have room for such circuitry.

Then there's the issue of drivers...

If you can build a bluetooth adapter in a USB connector I don't see why you can't built a couple of tiny chips into an adapter plug.

Why would they advertise it if it wasn't a convertor ?

Thanks for the replies... Sorry, I should have said it needs to be 'powered firewire' any other suggestions?

id be extremely warey also..

thats not a very relevent comparison, USB and firewire as mentioned above are completely different transfer protocols whereas a USB bluetooth dongle is a peripheral.

Sorry it's perfectly relevent, both have integrated circuits enclosed within the shell. It's just as easy to bury a chip that converts protocols as a bluetooth chip and antennea.

that adapter looks far too small to house anything that would be needed to convert the data transfer from one to the other. remember also that USB and firewire are different speeds so you may get issues if your FW peripheral is trying to dump data into the USB socket at a rate it cannot handle.

if it was something like this:

id say it may be plausable.
