Hello all, I'v had my 20D since feb this year and have no problems with it so far (touch wood :bonk:), but I'v just been reading about people having problems with the error 99 thingy and someone mentioned updating the firmware, is this something I should do now or is it only needed when or if you get the error 99?

Thanks

You should always have the latest firmware in most cases, very rarely would you leave it on an old version.

Each update adds better functionality of fixes problems.

The latest for your 20D can be found here

As for error99 it can be a miliion problems as it's Canons catch all code. If it's working perfectly for your needs leave it well alone.

Thanks guys, as said I'v not had a problem with it, was just curious about firmware. So I should update it then or leave it as it's working ok?

Thanks

PS my camera is showing firmware 1.1.0

If its that low id update it

Ditto.
OP, please make absolutely sure you know the process before you commence updating the firmware, I'd suggest printing the procedure.
If you're in any doubt, leave it until you're sure.
At the moment you have a working camera. If the firmware update fails, potentially you won't have.

There's always an element of should I/shouldn't I when considering firmware updates. In the world of PC's, the adage seems to be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", suggesting that firmware should be left alone unless you suspect updating it will fix a specific problem you're experiencing.

Having said that, unlike some PC BIOS updates, I haven't heard any bad reports about camera firmware updates, so you shouldn't have anything to worry about providing the update is performed correctly.

It's your call but if you do decide to go ahead with it, find the correct procedure documentation and follow the instructions to the letter or you could "brick" your camera.

Good luck!

(For what it's worth, I recently updated the firmware on my 30D and it all went smoothly.)

its always a tense moment doing firmware whether youve not done it before or youve done it 20 times.. "did i put a good battery in, or was it an old one which might die at any moment... arghhhh.."
