Hey all.

I was wondering round Ludlow Castle at the weekend, this is my first proper outting.

I managed to have a go with HDR too, something thats interested me for a awhile.

Admittingly I'm using Photomatrix trail, so the water marks are on the pics.

Heres the orginal:

and this is the HDR:

Personaly, for the first ever go, I think its come out ok?
What do you guys think?

Cheers

The HDR is fine, pretty understated.

It's the photo that causes concern for me, it's not a very engaging composition, it lacks contrast and it's not straight.

I think you've brought the detail out well....

As for interesting composition....who knows why the OP took it...is that our concern? lol

tbh, I just thought it'd be a good "experiment" picture. Not expecting to win awards for it lol.

I know its not interesting, and quite bland, I hope to have other pics later, just photobucket was being a PITA last night.

the first looks better in many respects

Could you explain a bit more?
I'm sorry to sound so thick, but I'm still getting used to terms and meanings.

Understand about it not being straight. Didn't think to put the grid up and help me level it out.

We all started somewhere :)

HDR is frowned upon by many people due to the fact that it's overdone, usually badly. In your case, you didn't go overboard putting all the sliders to 100 like most do, which is good.

There is some difference between the two shots, but not much.

What he means by contrast, the shot is very plain. There's no contrasting colours (the whole shot is the same colour), none of the bricks are really casting any decent shadows and what shadows were there have been lightened by Photomatix.

Hope that helps

There is a wall that I've been meaning to take a few pics of, maybe that'd be better to "test" HDR on.

I only used the fireplace, just as there was no-one around, I could set the tri-pod up, and it wasn't in direct sun.

I'll get another posted up, and see what you think then.

Thanks for the input guys :)

I prefer the first picture... there's more depth.

HDR works best with a more detailed shot IMO... There's nothing much in this one... it's a bit of a blurr... sorry!

Keep experimenting though!

Don't give up Martin, through experimentation and trial and error you will soon be posting some better HDR images. Like you say to find somewhere nice and quiet where you can have a think about the technique will be hard to start with but just keep at it I would say  It has really bought out the detail in the back of the fireplace if nothing else :D
