First one to laugh gets it...

not this again..........:bonk:

tis true though.. i know of many people that have done this. even speaking to MS people on the phone who reactivated the copy of windows.

rather that get into this debate, one thing we will agree on is you definitely need TWO licences to run TWO pcs!

goes without saying.. 1 copy of windows = 1 pc at a time. (unless you have bulk licening in place of course)

I have the Ecute Cube case, had to 're design' it to get the processor cooler and fan to fit. I

same with the EX-5 Cube case really, but I do like the basic cube/shuttle design so rather than plump for a standard base unit I decided to stick with them. Couldn't afford the Antex skeleton so this was #2 choice!

you'll need a new OS anyway if you want to keep the old pc...

Well no, I have XP Pro. Whatever, i was only confirming that W7 will only install on one machine rather than (as XP for example) on many is all. No fighting really needed - I have been on the wrong end of a call to MS in the past to get my XP validated twice already as I have had a lot of crashes here (none since the UPS was installed thank God). One of the joys of living in darkest Norfolk!

Thanks for all the help, I'll let you all know when it gets up and running, hopefully I'll soon be able to load LR and be using it before I forget I started it up!

Me again! My DVD/RW drive is IDE, I do not think the MB can support it, so is it a new drive or can I get an adapter lead maybe?

Another Q - 64-bit Windows 7, the MB is 64 bit ready but since it has a max 8Gb RAM capacity is it needed? Is it faster than 32-bit so that there's a reason or what? I know 64-bit is the way to go, but is now the time...

Arthur - vaguely embarrassed having to ask all this actually, I should have kept up!

looks like its got an IDE connector on there.. thatll support 2 devices.

if you ever want 4gb memory or above but 64 bit on otherwise youll only ever see 3.2gb of it.

Ah - must have missd that, I only saw the SATA support

That's what I needed to know... but I thought it was a bit higher than that. Looks like 64-bit it will be then, W7 has an XP mode though so I can still run my PS and LR, right? I only just got them!

it has a ATA-133 socket too.

XP mode is only in professional and above if i remember rightly. but so far i have not found a single app that refuses to run under W7 64. photoshop CS3 and LR 2.5 works fine.

Thanks Neil - I may get 7 pro on the student ticket if I can, that comes in the same price as retail HP.

Thanks also for the software confirmation too, although I suspect I could upgrade easily enough from the Adobe website if needed.

Arthur

Hi Mike - where? Best on their website is about £104

It was Home Premium, it might have said upgrade but I read somewhere that the upgrades were all full versions due to some court ruling.

Perhaps a wee google?

I know you laughed at the prospect of a mac, but I have read through this and it sounds like a nightmare. Buying all the stuff that's the best value, making sure it all works together, sourcing the best price for the OS...

And then if you had only spent a little bit more here and there.

At least with a mac, until they bring out another, you have a working computer for the ticket price. Those mac mini's seem ok, especially refurbished ones which save a little.

But you seem sorted. I did wonder if you could actually buy a computer for £200 - at least one that you would actually want to use :)

Graham

ok, you see the issues you're having with installing Windows XP on multiple pcs, thats because you're not supposed to!

Graham Blue Max, you're not helping.... the OP has clearly stated he had some budget constraints and wants to build a pc... on the same token as your mac solution, he could also go and buy a pc tower complete... we're just trying to help to build the best value for money pc he can have. I had the same issue myself when I bought my first house and had no funds, I built my first pc (An Athlon XP 2400, same as the OP's!) and I absolutely loved it, I had it for 6 years and its now my parents main pc.

Ambermile, I think the problem you're having here is too many people giving you advice. Everyone is correct on what they're saying, but you need to go with one persons advice rather than a little bit here and a little bit there. Neil_g and Amp34 know what they're talking about... have a chat with one of them to finalise your project. Its tough when one or two people spend time looking up components for you to buy and specify a Core2Duo processor then you mention casually that you bought an AMD mobo! I'm not having a go, but it'll be more efficient to have one persons help and I'm sure either of them (or myself) will be happy to help you.

With regard to the Windows 7 thing that keeps getting raised, believe me I've looked around quite a bit and the EBuyer deal is sound. Sure, someone else might be selling it for a pound or two cheaper, but with the Ebuyer deal you get a guaranteed GENUINE hard copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for £73 delivered (fully licenced, not upgrade, not download, no hidden costs....except you must buy some hardware!)

Am I coming across as a bit hard here? I hope not, just trying to help!

Hi John, I did point out the interest in the Skippers AMD board right at the start... maybe I should have been a bit more specific there? It was a price that I could not ignore, £55 for the MB and 2Gb RAM was not to be sniffed at so snapping up a bargain was always on the cards, regardless of any advice - I defy anybody not to do the same. Doesn't belittle the advice, had I upped my budget then similar may have been proposed as options.

I know the eBuyer deal is there, the last few posts have been more about pointing out that the upgrade route is not the right one if you want a full license! Yes, I could get a student discount maybe - would mean W7 Pro for the price of HP, but in the end I will likely go for the eBuyer offer simply because the student option is about 5 months away!

Arthur

PS - why am I embarrassed about having to ask all these questions? I have an Honours degree in Computing - although it was in 1995 :D

Hey Arthur, I didn't mean to come across as "having a go," just trying to help.

Yea, the AMD mobo thing confused me, I thought you were interested in it, not that you had bought it. But everything seems to be going ok so far. Now you'll have two pcs for decent money, much better than shoe horning new components into your new pc!

I noticed someone one the For Sale section sold a full retail version of W7 for £50, nice bargain for someone there!

here's a little tip to get your new pc up and running..... download a bootable copy of Linux for free, this'll help you set up the new pooter easily while you decide what you want to do regarding an OS.

All the best,
John

PS, don't worry about the degree thing, most people are the same (then again, I studied Engineering (including all the modern high tech methods) and now I work in a company that makes 2 of the worlds most expensive productions cars BY HAND!!!)

Not having a go at all, saying it like it is maybe :D

The mb, well first I couldn't have it, so that's when I posted here, then later I got a PM saying I could (don't ask) so had to go with it at that price. Then, because I now had the MB and RAM, I went for the best processor I could afford to go in the board and still get a case and a couple of drives.

That left me, as you say, with two PCs so old one for the kids and new one for me and Mrs A as well as for the kids when they both need one each. Also means there are a couple of really old samsung laptops I can sell off to cover some extra RAM for the old PC and some more for the new one too - as well as the W7. On that note, my little Canon Dial is up to £60+ so the OS will get ordered this weekend I hope :D

Linux? I have several disks here, amongst them Red Hat and Suze as well - never, ever got on with it I am afraid, just too damned lazy to learn - but, I will go have another look at your link and see, thanks.

Arthur

Me neither, buy its a handy way to check your system is fully operational while you wait on Windows7 arriving!

Re: Linux link...

Yeah, just been, saw, and now torrenting. Nearly 4Gb :gag: thanks God for Tiscali unlimited broadband eh?

It actually looks very good - better than last time I looked. It will give me a platform to launch the W7 installation from and I can have a dual-boot PC too just in case I get "issues" down the line ...

hopefully for a test purchase before buying the full version ;);):nono::nono::naughty::rules:

unless its the one they give away free.. i forget what it was called but after 10 mins i used the CD as a coaster :D

lol :D would they release a free one as a torrent???

torrents dont have to be illegal software downloads. look at mininova, now only supplies legal torrents...

lol think you misunderstood what I was saying  would they release there free software as a torrent rather than direct download like most others???

not looking to argue just curious to the release method. to all

well no the software company wouldnt of put it on there, but if its free software whats the the harm..

digressing a tad though :)

No problem, it's a free DL and the torrent is linked from the homepage link given above. I'm slightly miffed that everyone automatically assumes that because the word torrent comes into a conversation, something illegal is happening though, but that's maybe for another day.

Which one was that? The kernel of GNU/Linux is free anyway?

just to clear up.... its a legit FREE version, you can't install on your HDD, it'll only run from a disk (or a flashdrive....i think)

Oh, and you can download by ftp and http mirrors as well as their torrent download in either CD (700Mb) or DVD (3.6Gb) formats

Thanks John... 5 hours to go! I hate darkest Norfolk. I could move closer to the exchange couldn't I? Or open more ports maybe... Or even go for the 700Mb DL!

Arthur

Actually, yes they often do. Torrents are a great distribution system, especially for open source software. Remember, if the software is free then who is going to pay for the bandwidth for everyone to download it?

I used to play the online space game 'Eve Online', this was a subscription game but whenever a new version came out their servers couldn't cope with everyone downloading it at once so they also used torrents.

Hands up who else googled it just out of curiosity???
