Yippee... I've had a couple of my astro images on the cover CD, but this is the first time one of my images has been chosen for inclusion in print in the Sky at Night magazine. I'm very pleased and had to shout... Sorry :D

This is a shot of Iridium 65 flaring in sunlight. The Iridium network is a constellation of small communications satellites that have bright reflecting panels, and at just the right moment for about 20 seconds they can reflect sunlight down at the ground. This is about magnitude -5, but they get up to magnitude -8. Venus is about magnitude -4, as is the ISS currently, the 1/4 moon (looks half lit) is about -8 for scale.

There's no fees, but the pick of the month gets a decent astro prize. I'm hoping.

With the dedication you've shown to the subject John, it is very well deserved .. congrats

Thanks all.

Dave, as for the curtsy  I'll never move again if I try that... :D

Nice one  and great shot

Nice one John Congrats

(I guess the current trend for "enforcing" C&C is inappropriate at this time ? :D

Excellent, really well done

Thanks very much everyone.

Sarah, they do move fast, but I've seen satellites that zip across that same amount of sky in about 3 seconds... I didn't time that one very well

What do you mean Chris ? Feel free, you never know it might help me get an even better one, get me Hotshot of the month and the prize. Just bear in mind, that the actual location in the sky it'll show is totally out of my hands

I was just thinking that the white dots all over the sky seemed totally random and not really in keeping with the rest of the shot :D

Nice one John Congrats

Well done John! Top stuff :)

Cheers John

Thanks. It's in the August issue #51. Mine arrived yesterday, but it goes on sale on Tuesday.

Cheers Mick
