A tail of two halves....
I bought one of these a week ago, after asking for advise on here. It arrived quickly as usual, from Panamoz, just in time for a family weekend in Chester. I considered this to be the ideal chance to give the lens a run out. We would be going to the zoo, among other things and I was hoping to have a good play with the lens. Knowing it was a zoo, I needed more length, so I took my 70-200 along and my 7d mk2. I didn't mind that effectively the lens would become a 50mm, I just wanted to give it a good test.
The weather in Chester was a bit changeable, but mostly dull. I was therefore shooting at around ISO 400 all day to ensure I kept the shutter speed high enough. Normally over and above 1/400th. Often much higher. At the first glance I was not overwhelmed by the results either on the camera, or on the computer when I got home yesterday. I was a little disappointed. I was expecting amazing detail and clarity on the pictures I took of the kids, but I just didn't seem to be getting it. I thought I would be seeing 70-200 F2.8 II / 135mm F2.0 results and I wasn't.
Now, before I went I had my first go at Micro adjustment and didn't find it overly easy. However having said that the 35mm appeared to be about ok on all my cameras, so I left it well alone. My eyesight isn't the best and I sometimes found it hard to discern between one line and another. I didn't think I was far out though.
Now yesterday afternoon I went for a quick walk and decided to take the 35mm, but this time on my 5d mk3. Oh my word, what a difference !!! Even on the back of the camera I could see the clarity and ability of the lens. Admittedly, I was able to shoot at ISO200, but even so, I could see how good the images were. Then when I got home I talked my wife in to allowing me to take 2 quick images of her in the garden. She hates having her picture taken, so I had to be quick lol. ISO200, F2.5 and 1/250th, and the image was absolutely cock on. This was exactly what I was expecting from it.
So.......I am going to have another look at adjusting the lens to the 7d2 and give it another go. It might have been my eyesight that was out, or that it's simply the noise of the 7d2 that I don't like. But if I can't get it better, I will just have to accept that the 7d mk2 just isn't the camera for me, when using that lens at anything other than lovely clear blue sky'd days.
