I will be shooting my very first wedding in a couple of weeks so just looking for some tips and advice really...

I'll be taking my canon 500d with 24-70 F2.8, spare batteries etc....possibly a 50mm F1.8, tripod, spare memory cards....also as a backup Im taking a Nikon D200 with 18-105....

Downside, I have a cheap Yongnuo flash but was thinking of hiring a Canon speedlite 580....

as it is your first one take an extra pair of b*lls and a couple of cans of deodorant!

In all seriousness though, you've got a spare body, good lens (24-70) and lot of memory cards and getting a speedlight, so you have the crucial stuff, so the rest will largely be technical/artistic ability, organisational skills and a whole lot of nerve. If you have that and you've done the standard checking out the venue and knowing the style of shot the couple want then I'm sure you'll do well

I would personally be using the 1D for this to get a bit of a wider angle option and also shallower DOF ability. There are possibly times when you want the slightly better high ISO ability of the 500D but don't get bogged down by having the extra MP.

Shoot RAW, shoot more than you probably would normally, think about lighting, and probably best to keep it simple, get all the key shots in the bag then have a bit of a play.

Get a list of the important group shots from the couple before the day. I do this and it means the couple get the shots of the people that are important to them and a special relative doesn't get missed out. On the day take a few copies of the list in the order you will be shooting and let the Bestman and ushers organise people because they know them and you dont.

Haha, I wish it was as simple as this. It's an Asian wedding and rarely does anything go to plan. Plus, everyone's an uncle and auntie lol

Good luck. Sure you will be fine. Member to capture little details as well as the big things!

Your lens isn't very wide angle on the 500d, you might find it tricky if your in a tight space. Fot

That's a pity. This is the technique I use and it works every time. I haven't done an Asian wedding tho!!

Good luck

If it is an Asian wedding it is going to be extremely critical that you get the bride and the groom to nominate one person each whose job it is to ensure you capture the most important people. If you are just representing one side than just get a representative from that side. Everyone might be an Aunty but some aunties are definitely more important than others. Just my opinion as someone who has never shot a wedding but has attended lots of Asian ones.
